Capitol Hill’s summer mix of festivals continues this weekend with a DIY-style music and art block party on Summit Ave and a bigger — but perhaps better planned — return of the Seattle Street Food Festival to Cal Anderson.
Starting Friday and continuing with a second full day on Saturday, the 2014 Seattle Street Food Festival will include more than food trucks and a-list chef-helmed pop-up picnics. You’ll also find a full “shopping village” on Bobby Morris field from the Urban Craft Uprising folks. Starts Friday at 5 PM.
The third annual Summit Block Party brings 16 bands to the core of the densely populated blocks below Broadway. It’s fully local, mostly DIY, and completely free. Runs 11 AM to 9:30 PM on Summit between Howell and E Olive St.
Movies in Capitol Hill’s parks continue this Friday night with the classic Dirty Dancing screening in Cal Anderson and Floating Weeds screening in Volunteer Park. Cal Anderson organizers Three Dollar Bill Cinema promise: “In honor of the iconic line of dialogue ‘I carried a watermelon,’ moviegoers will participate in a hilarious watermelon relay before the screening.”
The annual Hanford Challenge Ice Cream Social returns to Volunteer Park on Sunday, noon to 2 PM:
Come learn more about the issues facing the Hanford nuclear waste site – the largest in North America and located right here in Washington state!
This event is FREE and will feature games, music and free ice cream from Half Pint Homemade Ice Cream*!
Also in Volunteer Park, the Pianos in the Park campaign will feature two performances on the instrument installed overlooking the reservoir:
· Saturday, August 9: David Golightly (Midday Veil) at 3 p.m.
o David Golightly is a founding member of Seattle rock band Midday Veil and member of the Portable Shrines collective.. He also performs regularly with his partner, Seattle artist and musician Emily Pothast.
· Sunday, August 10: Whitney Lyman (Whitney Lyman, Pollens) at 7 p.m.
o Whitney Lyman is a singer/songwriter from the Pacific Northwest. She blends influences from folk, classical, and dream pop, creating an ethereal world with her enchanting voice and lush compositions.
