According to East Precinct radio dispatches, multiple reports of gunshots in the vicinity of Union and Harvard were called in to 911 around 2 AM. One caller said a man in a silver Dodge Avenger was following their vehicle and had a gun. Police found the victims near Melrose and Pine but did not locate the suspect. Police were told the male suspect had fired multiple shots into the ground and air earlier in a parking lot near Harvard and Union during a dispute. There were no reported injuries.
  • Shooting victim found at Swedish Cherry Hill: Earlier Sunday morning, a male victim with gunshot wounds to his face and side arrived at 16th Ave’s Swedish Cherry Hill before being rushed to Harborview. • Minor Ave murder: Homicide detectives are investigating the murder of a man shot to death in a gunfight early Saturday morning outside a Minor Ave hookah bar just off Denny across I-5.
  • Cal Anderson mugging: A local business posted details of a Friday overnight mugging near Cal Anderson Park. It’s not clear if the incident was reported to police or Seattle Fire. From 11th Ave’s Vermillion:
This is disturbing: The artist we are framing tomorrow was jumped/mugged last night on his way home along Cal Anderson park. They took his phone, wallet, glasses and iPad. They knocked him unconscious on the back of the head and he came to a little while later. I was waiting to hear if they had taken the body of work he usually carries around in his backpack but luckily they did not. We are on schedule to get his art framed and hopefully raise some money to replace some of his belongings.
Vermillion’s owner said the victim was attacked around midnight. We will update when we learn more.
  • Theft suspect suffers broken jaw: The suspect in a theft at the Broadway/Pine Walgreens suffered a fractured jaw during the arrest, according to police radio dispatches. Police were called to the drugstore in the 1500 block of Broadway just before midnight on Friday. During the arrest, the intoxicated suspect suffered injuries requiring treatment from Seattle Fire. According to radio dispatches, the 21-year-old suspect suffered a busted jaw and was arrested for theft and resisting arrest. UPDATE: According to the report on the incident, police were placing the suspect under arrest for stealing beer:Screen Shot 2014-09-22 at 3.07.04 PMWhen suddenly, the handcuffed suspect made a break for it:Screen Shot 2014-09-22 at 3.07.15 PMPolice say the incident will not be reviewed as a use of force incident because the suspect injured himself. This document (PDF) outlines how SPD reviews use of force reports.
  • First Hill harassment: A man was reportedly attacked with bug spray in a possible hate crime on First Hill:
A man returning home from a doctor’s appointment Tuesday afternoon in First Hill said he had racist and homophobic slurs shouted at him before being hit with an unknown liquid that caused a burning sensation to his nose and mouth, according to the Seattle Police Department.

According to the police report for the incident, the victim and an acquaintance had just been dropped off by a cab outside the victim’s apartment building in the 1100 block of Minor Avenue around 4:30 p.m. when a car drove up behind them.
  • Louisa Boren fire: Seattle Fire Engine 22 was dispatched to 15th Ave E at E Olin Place early Friday evening after a park tree was set on fire. Firefighters arrived just after 5:30 PM to the report of smoke coming from a tree in Louisa Boren Park. The situation was handled quickly and the fire marshall was not dispatched to investigate. There were no details available on any damage. We’ll see if we can get an update on what caused the fire from SFD.

Really? Someone set a freakin’ tree on fire? NOT COOL. And BTW, it still feels like the wild wild west at Cal Anderson Park, so…maybe have cops patrol when it makes a difference? Like, when the bars close? I dunno…

Also, there’s still some ugly graffiti in Cal Anderson, and it’s been there for several weeks now. I’ve reported it twice. It would be nice if those reports actually caused some action to be taken.

When I see graffiti in a public park, I report it directly by phone to the Parks Dept. maintenance line, which is 206-684-7250. The women who take the calls there are very responsive, and I have had good luck getting the vandalism cleaned up within a few days.

How did you report it?

“The women who take the calls there”? OK…ummmmmmm, I use the graffiti line to report that UGLY stupid stuff. I guess I’ll try the gals and maybe that’ll help?

For the love of Pete, why do people still walk through Cal Anderson park at night?

Good question. To do so is asking for trouble.

Because it’s a beautiful park in the middle of a beautiful neighborhood during a beautiful nite. Why wouldn’t people be walking through the park?
Oh yeah, because a bunch of retarded yoof are jacking enfeebled timid weenies and facing no resistance.
Have any of you people ever heard of punching someone in the eye?
The reason this problem has gotten so out of control is because of pc nonsense from sheltered cowards.
Wolves smell weakness y’all.

Sorry to break it to you, but an armored tank could walk through that park and still get mugged. It may make you feel safer to say all victims of crime are victims because of something about them (that you don’t share), but everyone is vulnerable. And if someone has a gun, punching them in the eye (or attempting to) may not be the way to go. Also, if there are 10 people mugging you, you don’t have 10 hands, do you? Yes, people should do what they can to protect themselves but crime will still exist. I hope you don’t have a wake up call on this and can stay in your bubble. But at least don’t piss on others from your bubble. That’s not cute.

Bubble?

No.

So what?

But so what? The point is that this attitude of “oh well nothing I can do, better whine about bad cops and bad mayor and just hand them my stuff” is pathetic.

Thinking like this should not be encouraged.

And yes it’s easier said than done. You can’t argue with a gun, I know this well.

And you’re right that some people can’t defend themselves- that’s why it’s important that the community around them look out for them, and intervene when something obviously foul is happening to a vulnerable person.

I’ve intervened in fights or harassment many times on Capitol Hill that got me mangled only to have groups of onlookers just look on terrified.

What is with this?

Sorry to break it to YOU, but there’s no such thing as a “bubble” people can live in- they always pop.

It’s people’s general indifference to ‘community’ in this town that frustrates me. People who rally around inane political/ racial/ lgbt causes are often the same people that will skip away when they see someone being victimized for real.

Michee shows his/her true stripes when using the word “inane” to refer to legitimate political/racial/lgbt causes. The impulse to use vigilantism in the face of all the crime is understandable, but it’s not the smart way to go.

Cal Anderson is used as a reference. He was on 11th ave. He lives on 11th ave. So he should circumvent the neighborhood and somehow be able to arrive at his own home on 11th ave magically avoiding the street that abuts the park? Victim blame.

Disagree! He should teleport. Duh.

Okay, that does sound a bit crazy. At minimum, he should use his powers of invisibility, at least until he gets to his front door. Or just not leave his apartment in the first place. Ever. To do anything. Anywhere. Because everyone out late at night doesn’t need to be there for any reason. All the nightlife can just happen without any waiters, bartenders, bouncers, etc. So obvious.

I wonder if the Harvard & Union gunshots were at all related to the rather loud and obnoxious dudebro/fratboy party that seemed to be going on all fucking night in the QFC/Bartell’s parking lot.

Yes I’m sure it was “frat boys” or “dudebros” who were shooting guns.
I hope you’re satisfied when you or someone you care about is victimized killed or crippled by one of these “frat boys” guns.
Just cover your eyes and pretend it’s not one of your protected classes “gettin it poppin”.
It’s not bums, frat boys, or yuppies doing the majority of victimizing on Seattle streets, it’s mostly entitled thugs.
Sowwy that doesn’t fit your liberal effeminate narrative you repeat ad nauseam :(

Wow, you’re comment is so educated. I had no idea a narrative could be effeminate. Especially since I didn’t see the word swish anywhere. BTW, my best friend is a liberal effeminate narrative, so you just think of that fact next time you’re throwing out hurt.

I don’t get this joke.
You can’t conceive of an effeminate narrative?

Here’s an example:

Someone tells them selves that they deserve to be victimized because their too afraid to fight back, or even simply identify (to themselves even) who their attackers are. They tell themselves that every day.

Maybe ‘pussy’ narrative would be more appropriate.

Catching on or still lol’ing?

I live on the hill just a few blocks from Cal Anderson Park. I love that park and should be able to walk through that park or adjacent to that park any time of day or night. I don’t like the idea of giving up my park to thugs. Let’s find a way to reclaim that park for all of us that walk past it or through it as we traverse the best neighborhood in Seattle. I don’t want to live in a neighborhood where people say “don’t walk through that park at night.”

The park is CLOSED after 11:30PM. Please respect that and you won’t be as likely to become a victim.

Thank you very much, SPD. Could you please also fracture some ribs next time, too? Whatever takes the longest to heal is just perfect.

Quit complaining about the police response. Everyone in Capitol Hill has just been attacking the police for enforcing laws and gasp, imprisoning criminals. Well you get what you asked for, no police. Plus the police are probably too busy doing bureaucratic paperwork imposed on them by criminal worshipping bleeding hearts on worthless police hating “oversight” committees. Meanwhile the crooks roam free while neighbors live in fear and cant go outside at night.

I didn’t say that. But it’s a simple fact that most of the muggings have occurred when the park is closed.

But there ARE muggings that go on when the park is not closed.

Saying “oh but the park is CLOSED” does nothing to detract from the point that we should expect a certain level of safety in this community, especially so close to a police station
