CHS Community Post | On 15th Video Closes–A terrible loss to the community!

On a Tumblr notice entitled “The Ghost of On 15th Video,” the staff announced on September 8, 2014 that the store would be closing, effective immediately.  We are in shock at the loss of this wonderful store, with its dedicated, long-term staff.  We loved walking from our home to the video store to pick out a new or old favorite.   Talking with the staff was always fun.  :(

Is there any way for the staff to operate the store as a cooperative, similar to the recent transition for Scarecrow Video?  I would be interested in investing.

I’d back/join such a cooperative too. This morning, I was also having visions of a city-wide network of video stores under one nonprofit organization with a shared collection. (Because, as much as I love Scarecrow, driving that far every time I want to rent a movie seems like a ridiculous use of gas and time… every neighborhood should have a mini-Scarecrow).

Thanks for posting about the co-op idea. Our coverage of the closure:

Terrible loss! I wish it could continue somehow. I do not want to subscribe to NetFlix!

I had a monthly subscription for over 2 years. I loved this place. My boyfriend has Netflix and for me it just isn’t the same. Just the other day we felt like watching The Beach(which he had never seen) and Alice in Wonderland(Disney cartoon). Netflix didnt have either! That’s when I turned to him ‘see, this is why I need the video store!’. New release Tuesday kept me updated, weird indie films I wouldn’t think of trying, the employee favorites section, binge watching tv series I’ve never seen, a Sunday marathon from the directors section … I don’t have cable and a few movies a week was my thing! My dog is also sad and not understanding why he cant go in. I hope someone or a group can bring this place back!

This is just awful. What will become of the collection?
