Capitol Hill’s Bordeaux Mansion goes on and off market in three days

Bzhjt7NCMAAg-LM

We’ve written about the fast acting, cash-is-king housing market on Capitol Hill, but this is downright impressive. A $3.4 million mansion on Capitol Hill’s Millionaires’ Row was on the market for only three days before a sale was pending.

The Bordeaux Mansion, one of the most stunning along the northern stretch of 14th Ave, went on sale last week. The 8-bedroom, 7,600-square-foot house was last on the market in 1999. The Seattle landmark was built in 1908 by Thomas Bordeaux, a prominent lumber baron.

Check out photos here and more details from Curbed Seattle:

The hexagonal turret and tall brick chimney are the immediate examples of the home’s Bavarian/Tyrolean style. The four-story home is flush with porches overlooking the landscaped double-lot property. Inside, there’s five bathrooms, four fireplaces and a renovated kitchen. Down in the basement you’ll find a wine cellar, exercise room and indoor lap pool. But you can find us up in the fourth-floor, 360 sq. ft. media room with skylights that allow you to enjoy views of, well, just about everything.

Stunning home. I love walking my dog up 14th on the way to the park.

I’ve been curious on the status of the 14th and Aloha home (SE corner). It seems neglected, in need of some love.

I’ve been wondering about that house too (1409 Aloha St) where the entire front two story deck of the house appears to be about to fall over and is supported by rickety and tilting beams. Anyone know the story?

Here’s a street view of the house we’re talking about:

I’ve wondered about this place for years; I live nearby and walk past it often on my way home from work, and when the lights are one it’s only in one half of one of the upper floors, always. Like an apartment building with only one unit rented. Kind of creepy, especially on dark windy winter nights. I imagine that it’s either someone very old living there, who is alone now, or maybe some sort of Grey Gardens situation. Whatever the story is, it’s probably a sad one……

According to the King County Assessor website the house at 14th and Aloha was last purchased 12/28/1984 for 275,000.00. Yes that is correct, 275 thousand bought a lot more house 30 years ago. It was purchased by a man and woman with the same last name. Now only the woman is listed as the owner. Sadly I assume that it is our own version of Gray Gardens. It is a 9 bedroom 2 and 3/4 bath 6,720 sq foot house. I hope that the woman is getting the help that she needs and that before it falls down around her the house could be sold and brought back to its former glory.

I understand the woman who owns the house is from a Capitol Hill family with very strong roots, and remains an active volunteer on the Hill. It’s possible she doen’t live in the house but doesn’t care to sell it either.

This location would be absolutely perfect for new condos! Or maybe Amazon can open a retail store here! So many possibilities! I hope it comes down soon!

Yeah, that’s hilarious, Mr. P. This is about the house right next door to the mansion described in the top-level post that just sold, asking why it looks like the front part of the house is about to collapse, trying to see if anyone has information about what’s up and if anyone is even living there. No need to go off trolling, Mr. P, about gentrification or whatever other crazy has got your goat this morning.

Anyone have anything useful to say about what’s going on with this house?

I’m on that block almost daily for over 10 years. In all that time I’ve only seen one sign of human life, excluding a young woman I saw mowing the lawn the other day. There always seems to be only one light on upstairs in the same window all the time. Im acquainted with an across the street neighbor-even she has no details.

I posted about the light before seeing your remark, glad I’m not the only one who’s noticed that. Actually, I’m sure neighborhood children have good stories about this place; the sort of house you dare your friends to go on the porch and ring the bell.

Something tells me the children nearby don’t run up and ring the doorbell. They likely don’t have a moment of unstructured time. I’ll bet not one of them has their very own etch-a-sketch.
