SPD puts fork in IHOP bandit’s hold-up spree

Police say they have arrested the man responsible for robbing the E Madison IHOP and a Capitol Hill market in a string of crimes in which he threatened employees with a handgun he never displayed.

Thursday, officers working at 4th and Pine spotted the suspect “who was dressed in the exact same outfit he’d worn during several of the robberies,” SPD reports.

The 47-year-old suspect’s spree began March 6th when he walked into the Capitol Hill International House of Pancakes and took a seat. After a few minutes, he walked up to the register, told a staff member he had a gun, demanded money, and fled the restaurant.

Over the next week, the suspect pulled the same and convenience store on Capitol Hill, a Jack In the Box in SoDo, and a downtown Office Depot.

CHS reported here on the early Friday, March 6th hold-up at the pancake restaurant and here on the early Sunday morning, March 8th robbery at the Bellevue Ave J’s Quick Stop. The suspect was reportedly sporting an all-grey sweatsuit during the heist.

SPD says the suspect was booked into King County Jail for investigation of robbery. He has a lengthy criminal history including convictions for “organized retail theft.” He is also currently facing a charge for the theft of six Helly Hansen jackets from the Bellevue Square Macy’s in October.

Impressive awareness by the officer who spotted this guy. A future detective in the making.

It’s a good thing that criminals don’t change clothes very often! And also a perfect example of how dumb they can be by not doing so.

Hopefully, this repeat offender will get many years in jail this time.
