One stabbed in reported fight at Broadway and Pine — UPDATE: Police say bike crash lead to fight

Police arrived at a reported last-call fight early Sunday to find a male victim bleeding “substantially” from multiple stab wounds. One person was arrested and a second person was transported with an ankle injury in the just-before 2 AM melee reported at Broadway and Pine.

According to the Seattle Fire Department and East Precinct radio dispatches, police were called to a report of four people in a brawl at Broadway and Pine around 1:57 AM. Officers arrived to find a male at the scene bleeding “substantially” with serious knife wounds to his abdomen.

UPDATE: Police say the violent altercation stemmed from a bike crash:

Early Sunday, officers arrested a man for assault after he crashed his bike into and stabbed a pedestrian.

Witnesses called 911 just before 2 AM reporting a fight in the intersection of Broadway and E. Pine St.  Officers on foot patrol in the area quickly found two men, one armed with a folding knife and one with abdominal stab wounds. Officers took the 40-year-old suspect into custody and immediately began aiding the injured man. Seattle Fire Department medics treated the man’s wounds before taking him to Harborview Medical Center (HMC) with non-life threatening injuries.

Officers spoke to witnesses who said the victim was walking across the intersection against the signal when the suspect, who was riding a bike, collided with the victim.  The suspect and the victim began fighting.  The suspect then pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times.

UPDATE x2: Here’s an account of the scene from a person who said she witnessed the incident. The details about the behavior of the stabbing victim match details we received from another witness. Here is the account:

I witnessed this. The man who was stabbed was attacking the bicyclist and continued to provoke more fighting after he was stabbed. He was so drunk that he did not even realize he was bleeding profusely. Finally a couple of men broke up the fight and the bleeding guy walked over to where we were standing and I said “are you alright? You’re bleeding!” That’s when he picked up his shirt and saw the stab wound. I’m pretty sure that was when he first noticed he was injured. When the police arrived, the man was running around the middle of the street bleeding everywhere. The police officer came up to him and he said “call the police!” and the officer said “I am the police.” The man continued to drunkingly freak out until the police brought him down to the ground. The biker was injured as well and was laying in the bike lane. I felt like it took a very long time for the ambulance to arrive which was discouraging. Bros broing out. What a douche.

Per Seattle Fire radio, arriving units were delayed due to confusion about whether the scene was secure and safe for the medical response.

UPDATE x3 6/1/2015 9:43 AM: The suspect remains in King County Jail where he was booked Sunday morning for investigation of assault. According to court records, the 40-year-old arrested is a Capitol Hill-area resident with only one infraction on his Washington criminal record: a 2007 citation for driving without insurance — and a HOV lane violation.

Officers took the suspect to HMC for minor injuries sustained in the crash and ensuing fight.  He was later booked into King County Jail for investigation of assault.

A 911 caller also said he was the victim in the assault and had stabbed his assailant. Police took one male into custody at the scene and recovered a knife.

One person was taken to the hospital in serious condition with multiple stab wounds, a second was transported for treatment of a non-life threatening ankle injury.

Police closed streets in the area during the response.

When is an ankle injury life-threatening? This isn’t Oregon Trail.

Your apparent lack or reading and/or comprehension skills is amazing.
According to the article and eye witnesses. The guy who got stabbed crossed the street against the light, and then assaulted the bike rider when the collided. While I don’t condone the use of a weapon. It sounds like he was only defending himself from a drunk and violent idiot.
Next time, try to read the whole atricle and think about what you write before posting.

A violence-prone, armed cyclist runs down an innocent Capitol Hill reveler and then stabs him multiple times! Will the new Broadway bike lanes bring more of this dangerous, aggro cyclist element into our peaceful Pike/Pine neighborhood? Or is it finally time to return that precious asphalt right of way to the motorists to whom it rightfully belongs.

Did you read the article? The pedestrian was not innocent. Even before the update the article said that he was walking against the light and began fighting after he got hit by the cyclist. After the update it seems like the cyclist was acting out of self defense. I though only Seattle Times and other mainstream media readers were twisted enough to find any reason under the sun to demonize cyclists.

There’s nothing in the cyclists history to indicate that he is “violence-prone,” and he didn’t “run down” anyone – he collided with a pedestrian who was walking against the signal.

Judging from the remaider of your comments, I suspect that if the roles were reversed you’d still be blaming the cyclist.

Still, stabbing someone is not a reasonable person’s reaction, especially if you have a handy bike to extricate yourself from the situation. We don’t have to pick one person in this story to be the jerk–they both fit the bill.

Also, our “demonized cyclist”‘s one previous run-in with the law is for irresponsible DRIVING.

Is the blog going to report on the crazy arrest and crime scene that took place in the alley off of Bellevue and Thomas yesterday? They were there over 3 hours and nothing on the SPD blotter or blog. Anyone anyone?

Thanks Justin! I am counting on you guys for the story! All the cops that arrived kept saying we don’t have details other then a call was made out for “officer in trouble” and that is why so many officers showed up. They were taking finger prints and photos galore. You guys rock!!!
