There are a lot of games you can play at Bobby Morris Playfield and Cal Anderson Park — now add ping pong. Wednesday under a sunny evening sky, the park’s new ping pong table was warmed up for you with a party to celebrate the new feature installed by community group the Cal Anderson Park Alliance.

The ping pong table is hoped to help keep the area near the park’s restrooms and shelterhouse busy with players and activities and discourage camping and drug use around the facilities.

The table is the same style added last year to Westlake Park and is designed to (hopefully) withstand the rigors of urban ping pong play. CAPA plans to supply paddles and balls for the table through the summer but you can also bring your own. Play is first come, first served. Be fair. Share.

Has it been tagged yet? Shat on? Has anyone scraped the painted surface to smoke it or used the convenient paddles to assault someone? No? Just give it time.

Really? Now there is a cluster of ping pong tables in the area and it’s going to cause more traffic, especially on the weekends! This place is going to $%#@.

How horrible that more people will be using a public park for recreational activity.

Many people here think it is horrible that more people want to leave in this public community.

Jeff, I believe he is being satirical. At least I hope so.

I wish it were true that things like this “discourage camping and drug use,” but I’m not optimistic. People who engage in such activities will do their thing no matter what….they have no shame.

I agree with the wish and with the pessimism. My two girls both love the Cal Anderson Playground – our home away from home – but I’m particularly dismayed at the increase in drug use and drug paraphernalia in the park.

It’s bad enough having the park paths and grass area strewn with cigarette butts and caps to hypodermic needles (or worse) but the last few weeks as the weather has been better and warmer (so more campers) this garbage has moved onto the playground.

Note to Parks & Rec, please, patrol (and clean) UNDER the playground equipment.

What’s to stop some low life capitol hill street bum junkie and usual P.O.S. from stealing the paddles, balls. and or net and unbolting the table and stealing any of the above items?
Also what’s to stop any of the above from sleeping on or under the tables? That is if they haven’t been trashed out within a I will give it a week. Which is my guess being generous seeing that anything not nailed down either gets stolen or trashed with graffiti all over. Prime example the Broadway blue dog turds.
