  • Robbery suspect search: Seattle Police say they are looking for Garrett Shipley as a suspect in two armed robberies in the city including a July 3rd hold-up on Capitol Hill:
Detectives are looking for leads as they search for a man who robbed two people at gunpoint on July 3rd in the Capitol Hill and Fremont neighborhoods. Police believe Garrett Shipley approached his victims, claimed he was having an emergency and needed to borrow their cellphones. When the victims handed over their phones, Shipley fled in a grey 2002 Dodge Stratus. If you know where detectives can find Shipley, please call (206) 684-5535.
In the July 3rd robbery, the hold-up went down just after 11 PM in the 1200 block of Boylston as the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle with plates registered to Shipley. The car was last seen leaving the area headed west on Union. 20 minutes later, police say the same suspect pulled a similar hold-up on Fremont Ave N. Shipley has not been charged in the crimes.

  • Dick’s gunfire: We are still gathering details on a shooting incident late Friday night that briefly sent the nightlife crowds on Broadway scattering. According to witness accounts and SPD radio dispatches, police rushed to the area just before 10:30 PM following reports of a dispute involving gunfire near the busy fast food joint. There were no injuries reported. Police were in the area collecting evidence and looking for a suspect described as a black male in his late teens, around 5’9″, wearing blue jeans with “saggy shorts” underneath and an orange hoodie, and armed with a small silver revolver. Some witnesses reported that the shooter fled the area in a white SUV. There were no immediate arrests.

UPDATE: SPD’s report on the incident includes two witness descriptions of the scene:Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 11.06.54 AMAccording to the report, police searching the area were unable to find any shell casings which could indicate the weapon was a revolver-style pistol. Police are looking for surveillance video from the area.

It’s unfortunate that our neighborhood’s edginess has morphed from quirky and interesting to dodgy and less safe.

I walked home through that scene at Dick’s last night (post shooting) and couldn’t help but feel a little sad about my hometown’s descent into regular minor chaos. As a 6’2″ well built youngish dude I never feel threatened, but some of the characters out there are way more post apocalyptic crazy (dangerous even?) looking than Broadway’s alt-characters of my youthier youth. I can’t imagine social services have disintegrated that much.

I know what you mean. Too few interesting characters hanging about and too many drugged-out guys causing trouble and/or sleeping on sidewalk during the day. Not really a fun atmosphere

There may be a bad batch of something going around given some scenes on the southern part of Broadway during the last week. The hospitals area is always kind of rough/sad but it’s gotten significantly worse.

as long as 19yr old uneducated people have no way to earn a living this nonsense will continue. if we subsidized mfging as opposed to subsidizng lock up we’d be cooking with gas. Same money just less lobbying power,

Where does it say anywhere in the report that it was an “a 19 yo uneducated person”? All the report says is “…. described as a black male in his late teens, around 5’9″, wearing blue jeans with “saggy shorts” underneath and an orange hoodie .. ” .

I see your point but really– how many EDUCATED guys like this do you know that would be caught dead dressed like that, and shooting up Dick’s on a Friday night? I think your well-intentioned concern for profiling is a bit misplaced here.

It’s not “society’s” responsibility to find a job for such a person….it is the individual’s. But too often that person takes the easy way out….unemployment, and a lifestyle of crime.

*sigh* Do you really believe that a life of unemployment and crime is easy? While personal responsibility is laudable, do you really not understand that it is better for all of us to ensure these people have support systems that help them get jobs and become productive members of society? These are basically kids we are talking about.

I see what you are driving at but its more complex than that sort of statement. Some crime involvement among youth reflects inter-generational involvement in crime in their extended family or too many negative reinforcers convincing them that being legit and building a life is either unappealing or unattainable. Add the “victim mentality” that sometimes is reinforced by activism. Why is no one telling youth it is perfectly normal to move in and out of different cultures but that they can still be themselves. There is workplace culture, some sort of social contract in greater society, school culture (particularly for success in college) church culture, etc.

The people of this city are just reaping what they have sowwed you advocate for anti social behavior in the name of justice then live. If we’re lucky it will only harm those who advocate for it.

Though I’m not totally sure what sowwing is (is that some kind of sex thing?), where are all of these advocates for “random gunfire into crowds?”

If those people exist in numbers, then I’m with you; they should totally be sowwed in their reaps.

Just to be helpful, “reap what you sow” is a quote from the bible. To reap is to harvest crops. To sow is to plant crops. The expression means that if you start out badly, things will continue that way.
