Capitol Hill food+drink | A look inside Lionhead

IMG_8780
We already told you quite a bit about Lionhead when the little Sichuan restaurant from Capitol Hill’s Jerry Traunfeld debuted next to big sister Poppy on Broadway earlier this month. But, like we said, while other big name chef/owners (we’re looking at you Ethan Stowell and Josh Henderson) are creating restaurant-opening machines, Traunfeld has taken a decidedly calmer route. With one opening every seven years, he is on pace to only open two more restaurants by the year 2030. By that time, we project Stowell to have opened his 500th.

Wit no tips and no service charge, Lionhead also presents a different model for restaurants transitioning to new compensation models for their employees. At Lionhead, Traunfeld has priced his menu to support “equitable” wages for his staff, the restaurateur says.

Here’s a look inside what all that patience created — and, more importantly, a small visual taste of the Chinese-faithful dishes Traunfeld and head chef Kenneth Lee are creating on north Broadway inside the Traunfeld’s very own “2-block radius” where even the cocktails echo with the neighborhood’s color and culture. How about a Jade Pagoda, old timer, to wash it all down?

Chop Shop, the ambitious new Pike/Pine creation from Ericka Burke, is now serving breakfast, lunch, and, yup, brunch:
Chef Ericka Burke and the Chop Shop crew are thrilled to be adding breakfast and lunch to the restaurant’s daily lineup. As of today, Chop Shop Cafe & Bar will be open Monday through Friday at 8am, and Saturdayand Sunday at 9am

On weekdays, breakfast will include a European-style breakfast buffet complete with housemade preserves and toast, granola and yogurt, fruit, a juice du jour, and Stumptown coffee. The $12 buffet is available until 11am—afterwards, lunch items will be available in addition to the standard breakfast menu until 3pm.

The breakfast menu includes savory dishes like a breakfast sandwich with a fried egg, bacon, heirloom tomato, herb aioli, and Gruyere or the Chop Shop Breakfast, a hearty plate comprised of a bone-in ham steak, herb-roasted potatoes, and two eggs any style. On the sweet side, there’s Mascarpone-Stuffed French Toast with peaches, almonds, and maple syrup or Lemon Ricotta Pancakes with blackberries.

On weekends, the breakfast menu will be on offer from 9am until 3pm—no buffet on the weekends. The lunch menu will become available in addition to the breakfast menu everyday at 11am.

Hi all!! I am looking for local area bakeries or individual bakers who would like to donate sweets for a 1 day pop-up “Depressed Cake Shop”. The event is going to be held on October 10th at Sole Repair in Capitol Hill. We are looking for baked goods with a “grey” or depressed theme, so the door is wide open to your interpretation of what that might look like to you! The event is being held to raise money for the wonderful grassroots non profit NAMI Greater Seattle (National Alliance for Mental Illness). NAMI provides support, education, resources and advocacy throughout the Greater Seattle area, to families affected by mental illness. It is a cause very near and dear to my heart as my youngest brother suffers from Schizophrenia. Would love to have your support with this event so please let me know if you are interested, or have any suggestions of who might be!

Also somewhat related to Capitol Hill, Villa Escondida (a.k.a. the place with the best mexican meal I’ve had in Seattle) just re-opened in their new Belltown location.

Here’s the info for anyone that’s missed them!

Depressed cakes? Wow. Not the best idea for a fundraiser. The “All Gender Bathroom” sign is really annoying. I miss my women’s room. Sorry men, you’re messy.
