Seattle Police swarmed the area around Cal Anderson just after midnight Saturday morning as an East Precinct officer fought an attempted robbery suspect.

A massive response of police cars and officers from the nearby 12th/Pine East Precinct converged near the 11th Ave church where the officer caught up with the 22-year-old suspect and called for back-up as he attempted to take the man into custody.

According to East Precinct radio dispatches, the officer reported that the suspect was knocked out in the struggle.

A female victim in the park reported that a female with the male had attempted to steal her purse in the midnight attack. As police arrived, the suspects fled on foot and ran from the area.

Seattle Fire was also called to the park to treat multiple people for exposure to pepper spray. SPD interviewed a female who was in the park who said she used the spray to chase of the attacker.

The SPD officer who captured the suspect was also treated by Seattle Fire.

The suspect was taken into custody and is being investigated for assault.

Officers arrested a man for robbery Friday night after he attacked two people in a Capitol Hill Park and injured an officer.

Witnesses began calling 911 at midnight Friday reporting a robbery at Cal Anderson Park near the tennis courts.

Officers Anthony Ducre and Brian Sunderland were the first to arrive and saw the suspect attacking a man as they approached. They immediately got out of their patrol car and chased the 24-year-old suspect across the park, cornering him in a nearby parking lot.

The suspect tried to escape by climbing a fence, but was stopped by the officers.  The suspect hit both officers in the head before being taken into custody.

Witnesses said everything began when the suspect tried to steal a woman’s purse near the tennis courts.  A second man attempted to intervene, when he too was attacked by the suspect.

Seattle Fire Department medics treated the male victim for a facial injury at the scene before he was taken to Harborview Medical Center for evaluation. One of the officers was also taken to the hospital for evaluation of a head injury.

Officers booked the suspect into King County Jail for investigation of assault and $160,000 in warrants.

According to court records, the 23-year-old suspect is already facing charges for violation of a court order for domestic violence.
