Investigation after woman critically injured in 20th Ave fire — UPDATE

A suspicious basement fire in the 500 block of 20th Ave near E Jefferson in the Central District injured at least on person Thursday night.

Seattle Fire responded to the reported house fire in a duplex at 506 20th Ave around 8:30 PM. Arriving units found smoke coming from the building and worked to battle flames in the structure’s basement.

At least one person was reported injured. SFD reported a woman was transported from the scene in critical condition after the fire. UPDATE 11/13/15 10:00 AM: The woman died of her injuries after being found unresponsive outside the home, KOMO reports.

UPDATE 11/16/2015: Seattle Fire tells us the cause of the fire was determined to be “improperly discarded smoking materials.”

Seattle Fire dispatched the fire marshal to investigate the suspicious blaze. According to East Precinct radio dispatches, SPD’s arson and bomb squad was also called to the scene.
