- 20th/Jackson driver hits pedestrians: A man and a child were seriously injured Sunday night after they were struck by a driver on S Jackson at 20th Ave S. Seattle Fire was called to the scene around 7:34 PM. The adult male and boy were reported in serious condition when they were transported from the scene. Police are investigating the collision. UPDATE 11/16/2015 2:45 PM: SPD tells us that the injuries in the collision were fortunately limited to abrasions on the 5-year-old boy. The adult male’s injuries were categorized as non-life threatening. Police say the driver “failed to yield” as the two were crossing Jackson at the intersection and will be cited for the collision.

E Columbia fire: Seattle Fire battled a blaze in the attic of a two-story house in the 1700 block of E Columbia Sunday night. The fire was first reported around 10:15 PM. Fire crews arrived to find flames coming from the building’s roof and began to battle the blaze in the attic living space. The fire was reported under control by just after 10:40 PM as firefighters continued to extinguish any remaining hotspots. We do not have any information regarding injuries. The fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire. UPDATE: A SFD spokesperson said the fire was determined to have been caused by a “failed chimney” that “allowed hot embers to reach the attic structure.”

This intersection has a stoplight and crosswalk. Where the pedestrians crossing legally, or did the driver run a red light? Was it a right-hand turn gone wrong?
Drivers and pedestrians need to be aware of one another. Just because you have the right of way in a crosswalk doesn’t mean you don’t have to look both ways before you cross. If you are struck by a car you will lose! It is never worth your life to not look and to not to be aware of your surroundings.
It is getting dark earlier, if you are walking at night it is a good idea to wear reflective gear or at least bright colored clothing.

Brakes stop a car much more effectively than reflective clothing, and I hear they take very little effort to use.
There is virtually zero evidence that wearing that kind of clothing does anything to heighten drivers’ awareness.
A person operating an automobile will brake an objects in their path, If a driver can see you they will apply the brake. Reflective clothing DOES give drivers the ability to see you.
You say there is virtually no evidence? Maybe you have not heard of online research.

You mean evidence like pages of links to firms that sell hi-viz clothing and a single study that recommends reflective clothing over flourescent colors?
OK.. to your point, We should paint all the stop light lenses black. There are ZERO Studies out there that support a visual red light when illuminated will prompt drivers to stop. Yes it’s red under all that black paint, but the driver won’t pay any attention anyway. OR maybe what you’re trying to say is that drivers should drive with their eyes closed. I think you’re on to something here.
I feel your feelings are mixed and you should take a good look in the mirror, turn off all the lights and find yourself. If you can’t see your reflection I suggest the use of a flashlight. But wait… never mind, to your point, it just won’t help.
Seattle pedestrians are pussies. We are raising our kids to fail on the streets in the real world. Travel to any other city other than Seattle with your same pussy Seattle street smarts and you’ll be dead in less than an hour. Mamma taught me to look both ways before I cross.
