City Market hit again by masked smash and grab cigarette burglar

It will take more than a large rock through the glass door to keep City Market down. The Bellevue Ave quick mart was open for business Monday despite an overnight break-in which brought a slew of Seattle Police to the area to search for the suspect believed to have burglarized the grocery before.

Police and a K9 unit were called to the area around 1:45 AM Monday after the shop’s new alarm system was set off when somebody smashed a large rock through the store’s glass door and was seen fleeing the area carrying a white box full of cigarettes.

According to a witness, the suspect was described as a male with a bandana around his face, wearing a red ball cap, and a dark hoodie. He was last seen fleeing southbound on Bellevue to E Olive St. Despite the call for the police dog, officers were unable to track the repeat bandit down.

Thanks to the many CHS readers who sent us tips about about the police activity.

According to an employee at City Market, the burglar’s smash and grab exploits have targeted cigarettes from the shop’s display area.

So sorry to see things like this happening to this store. It’s practically a Capitol Hill institution now.
