A pizza joint every two blocks: Meltdown Pizza Co. ready to serve its slice of Capitol Hill

In a Capitol Hill’s pizza economy so strong that even Amante’s is upgrading its game on E Olive Way, there are are two new openings to celebrate this week.

Meltdown Pizza Co., at Pine and Minor in a former therapeutic shoe shop at the base of Capitol Hill, is already up and running. Catch up.

CHS visited Sunday night to find the new pizza joint fully in motion with whole pies and pizza by the slice in a pared down, straightforward approach joining the neighborhood’s explosion of pizza options. Meltdown Pizza comes from the partnership behind nearby Still Liquor. We talked to co-owner Josh Carrigan about the project way back in March 2015 as it was first taking shape. “We’re not trying to invent the wheel,” Carrigan told us back then, promising “New York slices to go,” takeout, and, eventually, delivery in a two-block radius. You can sit down with a beer at Meltdown — or grab a pie to go to enjoy with cocktails around the corner at Still.

Other recent Hill pizza debuts include Dino’s Tomato Pie on E Olive Way and Pizzeria Ottantotto on Broadway. Steve Calozzi, bringing his Italian Family Pizza to First Hill by this summer, summed up the trend:

“When people are looking at costs, the margins are really good in pizza. If people keep it simple, 15 to 20% profit. But pizza is just me. It’s what I do.”

Like its coffee shops, it seems Capitol Hill is destined to have a pizza shop every two blocks.

Meltdown Pizza is located at 1201 Pine. Its hours are 11 to 11 Monday through Thursday, 11 to midnight on Friday, noon to midnight on Saturdays, and noon to 11 on Sundays. You can learn more at meltdownpizza.com.

Meanwhile, another pizza player joins the game this week as Portland export Sizzle Pie says it is ready to debut on E Union in the old spaces formerly home to Auto Battery sports bar and Po Dog hot dogs:

The beloved Portland pizza joint, famous for having vegan and vegetarian pies craved by meat eaters, and salads named after Roman tyrants and hardcore punk bands, is bringing its day and late-night fare to Capitol Hill. With more than 35 drink options between beer, wine and soda, Sizzle Pie is a destination for anyone in love with classic and unconventional pizzas (gluten free folks too).

The big opening is planned for Thursday but they were already slinging pies for takeout over the weekend as part of a promotion with Uber. CHS first reported on Sizzle Pie’s Seattle expansion plans last summer.

This restaurant appears to now be closed. Any updates on this? I’ve heard that they closed without notice and employees were not paid salary due to them.
