• Pike/Pine drug bust: The effort to tamp down the annual spring and summer increase in Pike/Pine street crime paid off early Saturday morning with the arrest of a suspected dealer carrying a bag full of drugs and two guns. Police say the bust went down after officers saw a deal in action near 10th and Pike and moved in to make an arrest just before 2 AM Saturday:
  

  As officers moved in to contact the individuals involved, the suspect tried to flee from the scene. Officers took the suspect into custody and recovered a loaded .40 caliber handgun from his waistband as well as a small amount of narcotics. The handgun had an extended magazine containing 16 rounds. After placing the suspect under arrest, officers located more drugs inside the suspect’s backpack, as well as a Tech 9 semi-automatic handgun with an extended magazine containing 35 rounds. The guns and narcotics were placed into evidence and the suspect was interviewed at the precinct by Gang Unit detectives. The suspect was later booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of VUCSA-Intent to Distribute, with weapons charges recommended. This remains an on-going Gang Unit investigation.

  “The East Precinct will continue to bring in additional officers on an overtime basis to address crime and community concerns,” the SPD statement on the arrest includes. Last April, newly re-installed East Precinct commander Capt. Paul McDonagh began a strategy of increased officer presence around Pike/Pine as the neighborhood swelled with weekend revelers and the regular increase in street crime that accompanied the crowds.

• Bike-motor vehicle collision: A male rider in his 30s was transported to Harborview with a head laceration and what was believed to be a broken wrist after crashing into a moving vehicle Saturday morning at Broadway and Union. Seattle Fire was called to the scene around 5:40 AM to treat the rider who reportedly crashed into the side of a vehicle that was moving at about 20 MPH at the time of the collision. According to Seattle Fire radio reports, the rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. No further details of the crash were available.

• UPDATE 2:20 PM — Melrose fire: Seattle Fire took care of a fourth floor fire inside a unit of a Melrose Ave condo building Saturday afternoon. SFD responded to the 1700 block of Melrose at Denny just after 1:30 PM. The fire was contained to the unit where it started. We are not aware of any significant injuries associated with the incident. The Seattle Fire Marshal is investigating. Denny was closed to traffic in all directions during the response.
