Claiming musicians for a neighborhood doesn’t really work when worldwide domination can be achieved with an Instagram and a Sound Cloud account. But when the music is centered on the lives and times on the streets around us, that’s another story.
Artists we’ve featured before on CHS are out with new works this week — both have a lot to say about life in Central Seattle.

A whole song about uncle Ike’s? That shop has done more to clean up that crappy intersection than that church next to it ever did.

The pot store doesn’t intrude on the church’s mission. In fact, since it is selling a legal product, that is duly taxed, it supports the tax-exemption that that church receives.
Also, legalized pot was approved by a majority voting in the election.
Wah, wah.. The CD is not a “Black” neighborhood, it’s a neighborhood. Anyone can move there, White,Black,gay,Trans,Asian,Moslem,Morman,Pot heads, etc.
People are welcome to cluster as they chose but they are also able to move as they chose.
Unfortunately the CD was once a majority black neighborhood because black people were not allowed to buy property “everywhere” because of the process of “redlining”, racially discriminatory housing covenants, and processes of white flight & racism in general. Currently, racial discrimination in housing still persists across Seattle.

That was true of Jews and Asians too. And since there really weren’t many black people in Seattle before WWII, It was fairly balanced racially.
It was only majority black for a time in the late 60’s to the early 80’s.

For the uninitiated, the Union Street Hustlers are the gang at 23rd & Union. Hmmm, how many members of the african-american community have been shot to death by members of that gang? How many Hustlers have been killed by other sets? Yeah dude, Ike’s is the problem. Hilarious!
