  • Attack suspect sought: Police are seeking the public’s help in finding the man responsible for an attack and attempted rape of a 72-year-old woman inside her Capitol Hill home Saturday near 17th and E Garfield Denny — UPDATE: We’re checking with SPD on this location. We were checking into a similar incident that happened on 17th Ave near E Denny. More when we sort it out with SPD. UPDATE x2: SPD has confirmed that the attack happened in a multifamily residence near 17th and Denny.

On Saturday, May 7th, at approximately 11:45 am, the woman had just entered her residence near 17th Avenue East and East Garfield Street Denny when she  noticed the suspect standing in her front door.

The suspect knocked the woman to the ground, attempted to sexually assault her and struck her several times.  The victim elbowed the suspect in the face and the suspect eventually left. After the man left, the victim was able to call 911.  Officers, medics, forensics specialists and Sexual Assault Unit detectives responded to the scene. East Precinct patrol officers conducted an exhaustive search for the suspect, but they were unable to locate the suspect.

Medics transported the victim to Harborview Medical Center, where she is receiving care for serious injuries sustained during the attack.

Detectives are now working to identify the suspect, who was described as a black male, 40-50 years old, with a dark complexion and a heavy build.  He was described as having a long face and a thin nose, and unkempt short hair.  He was last seen wearing a red and black lightweight parka and jeans.

Anyone with information on this crime or the suspect is urged to contact Detective Gallegos at (206) 684-5767.

  • Armed robberies: A police K9 unit tracked the trail of a suspect in a gunpoint hold-up reported at 17th and Pine just off E Madison early Wednesday morning but police were unable to make an arrest. According to East Precinct radio dispatches, the suspect in the armed robbery fired off a shot during the course of the incident around 1:30 AM. The victim reportedly told police that shot didn’t sound real — but also said he hit the ground in fear. Police searched the area and tracked the possible E Madison escape route for the suspect — described as a white male in his 20s with short hair, wearing no shirt and a black shorts — but were unable to track him down. Earlier in the night around 11 PM, police searched for a suspect described as a black male around 5’5″ and wearing a camo pattern hoodie who held up a female victim at gunpoint at 9th and Cherry. Police detained one possible perpetrator but it was determined he was not the suspect and released. Police are investigating both incidents.

In the documents, the victim says during the ride the suspect “was talking about his anger with women,” which she says frightened her. The victim says when they arrived at her residence, she got out of the car to smoke but the suspect told her she could smoke in the vehicle. Once inside, according to the detective, the suspect started the car and drove around the neighborhood for an hour, despite the victim’s pleas to return her home, and “pointed out various locations and telling her he was a former law enforcement officer and talked about the various crimes he investigated there.”

The whole “gunshots or fireworks” thing on Capitol Hill just cracks me up. Seriously, you can’t tell the difference? They sound nothing alike. Are these people calling 911 about a gun battle every time the garbage truck goes thumping and banging down their street?

This is very disturbing. A 72 year old woman attacked in her own home in the middle of the afternoon? The person who did this is despicable. They need to catch him now. Him being on the streets is a danger to everyone. I hope she is ok and has family to help support her.
