Two shot in weekend of Central District gun violence — UPDATE

A male victim was dropped off at Harborview with a gunshot wound to his buttocks following a shooting incident that lit up 911 line Sunday night around 28th and Jackson. The shooting was part of a series of gun incidents around the Central District over the weekend — but fortunately the only one in which somebody was hit.

Police fanned out around 28th Ave S after the reports of shots fired started coming into 911 around 9:15 PM.

Police found casings and bullet holes in houses in the area but no victims were immediately located. Some witnesses said three to four males involved in the melee had been seen speeding away in a silver car.

A few minutes later, a 29-year-old male victim was dropped off at Harborview with a gunshot wound to his posterior. The injuries were believed to be non-life threatening, according to East Precinct radio dispatches.

The shooting was part of a weekend of gun violence. Police were also investigating a Sunday afternoon drive-by reported in the 700 block of MLK Way S, and two early morning gunfire incidents at 23rd Ave S and Lane and 14th Ave S and Lane, plus another reported drive-by earlier that morning at 14th and Main. Meanwhile, police also investigated a shooting early Saturday morning around 14th and Alder and a gunpoint robbery just before 3 AM Saturday at 23rd and Cherry.

UPDATE 4:55 PM: According to SPD, a 28-year-old man was shot in the leg early Sunday morning and dropped off at Harborview Medical Center. The victim said he had been shot near 12th and Main. SPD said the incidents were not random acts and that police would be increasing patrols in the Central District following the weekend shootings.

When will SPD start patrolling this area regularly? I live at 29th & Jackson and when I first moved in 8 years ago, there was always an unmarked Police suburban parked at Flo Ware Park. This gangs are back in the area, and more needs to be happening. Gunfire is becoming an everyday occurrence. I am outraged. How much more gunfire in the same locations over and over are we to put up with. SPD needs to make a presence in the neighborhood and to send a message that this will not be tolerated!

Why don’t we just build a big fence around the central district and let these gang-bangers shoot each other until the problem solves itself.

There is no neighborhood official named the “Central District”. The CD is a collection of neighborhoods.

28th & Jackson is the historical home of the CD gang the Deuce-8s, one of the top and most violent sets in the CD. I do believe they consider themselves a CD gang… not a Leschi gang. You will need to take your concerns of locality name up with them.

God forbid anyone should think that it’s in the CD.

Thanks for reporting . I live within blocks of Jackson/MLK and was shocked at the upswing in violence this weekend—there were at least 3 separate gunshot incidents reported on NextDoor within a 5-10 block radius. It put the whole neighborhood on edge.

I thought it was interesting there were 9 shots in the afternoon. (4 from one gun and 5 from a seemingly differently sounding gun). Police response seemed slow, but did happen.

In the evening, there were quite a few more shots, pulling me out of bed to see a guy jump a fence and start running through my neighbor’s yard. I didn’t see him pop out on the other side, but he probably went through the construction.

The police were quite a bit more aggressive and quicker to respond in the second shooting.

What was strange was that in both incidents, I heard no cars speeding away or no yelling.

SPD should have a car or two patrolling the area all the time when this is going on. If they can respond quicker because they’re already in the area they might catch the bad guys

its maddening that there was an incident where well over 20 shots were fired and then like 2 hours later there was a gang involved assault on the same corner. it was reported on the beat twitter. How embarrassing that the gang members are so used to spd not doing anything that they can come right back out the same night.

The police have been rendered toothless and this is the result you’ll have to live with.

No, they havent. They can do their jobs without beating people. They are paid professionals, not rival gang members.

Regardless of one’s feelings on the DOJ settlement, a result has been that the police have less tools to work with and have less time to patrol. Much more of their time is spent on non-patrol work/tasks than it was just a few years ago. We have more citizens and less patrol hours (even if the number of cops is the same or marginally more than before).

Really don’t want to get anyone going on a discussion of the police, just need to recognize that we have less patrol.

Oh, that and the east precinct cops are typically concentrated on Capitol Hill dealing with that huge, but far less violent mess.

There was a shooting on Sunday around noon at 28th and King and then again later that night. Where are the cops in all of this?
