  • Broadway shoplifter beating: Police were called to a “convenience store” in the 1500 block of Broadway late Friday night to a report of an attack on a shoplifter. According to the SPD report on the incident, witnesses said the shopkeeper had gone after the shoplifter for trying to steal a bottle of wine around 11:30 PM Friday.Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 3.00.45 PMThe alleged thief didn’t hang around for the alleged beating — or police. He was nowhere to be found. According to report, security guards in the area stopped the beating and took away the shopkeep’s bat. “I informed XXXX assaulting someone with a baseball bat is a felony and should another similar event be reported he would be arrested,” the reporting officer writes.
  • Hate crime investigation: A man arrested after discharging a cloud of “bear spray” into a crowded crosswalk at Broadway and Pine last Thursday morning is facing possible hate crime charges in an allegedly racially-based attack. According to the police report on the just before 8 AM incident, the suspect, who is white, was reported to have “rapped” about the black male victim’s sister before threatening him with the pepper spray. Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 3.13.28 PM
After his arrest, the suspect claimed he heard people at Broadway and Pine planning to target him in a drive-by shooting. “You know how Black people are!” the suspect allegedly told police, according to the SPD report.
  • Workplace investigation: Here is an unforeseen outcome from the increased number of technology firms in the neighborhood. Police were called to the offices of a tech startup inside 11th Ave’s Chophouse Row last Wednesday to investigate a reported burglary involving the computer of an allegedly disgruntled employee who had recently been fired. According to the report, the employee had been showing signs of increasingly unstable behavior and was terminated from the company the week before. The employee repeatedly returned to the office and had previously been forced to leave before being seen in the office late at night and walking off with the computer. A company representative told police they were not sure how the terminated employee had entered the office.
  • Backpack thief: Police were looking for the suspect in a late night Saturday theft of a bag from the employee area of a business in the 300 block of E Pine. According to the SPD report, the suspect was caught on video and appears to be the same man responsible for at least one recent similar theft at a nearby business. Police are investigating.
  • 15th Ave E burglary: A burglar made off with an undisclosed amount of booty after entering a shop in the 300 block of 15th Ave E sometime early on the morning of May 23rd. Police say there was no sign of any forced entry in the break-in.
  • 12th Ave burglary: An overnight burglary reported Friday morning at a business in the 1800 block of 12th Ave appears to have been an inside job, according to police:Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 3.23.21 PM
  • Cash burglar: Police investigated a home burglary reported Thursday night in the 1900 block of 10th Ave E involving an apparently anti-technology thief. According to the SPD report on the incident, the burglar entered the residence and made of with a laptop and $500 cash. The computer was found in a nearby yard. The cash was not recovered.
  • #manintree update: Cody Lee Miller, the homeless man who made headlines with his 25-hour standoff with police in a downtown Seattle sequoia tree, has been found unfit for trial on charges of malicious mischief and sent to Western State Hospital for evaluation.

I don’t think the smoke shop sells wine.

My guess would be the Stabby Shell. It attracts a fair amount of sketchy characters and most of the staff are East Africans so the response to a lot of the crackhead behavior that goes on in the store is a bit more violent than you’d see from most shopkeepers.
