CHS Pics | Simpler times at the Volunteer Park Pride Festival

Saturday, Seattle Pride was enjoying some simpler times. Revelers at the Volunteer Park Pride Festival — retooled from recent years as a family oriented picnic — were dodging fat June raindrops while doing their best to enjoy a beer garden, food trucks, booths, and bands. All-female AC/DC cover group Hell’s Belles rocked away the rain if not the cloud cover. Hours later, 2016’s Pride festivities would take a horrific turn with the murders in Orlando.

Sunday’s vigil in Cal Anderson would be a night of recovery. And also defiance. A full calendar of Capitol Hill Pride events and parties remains. Some events like Trans* Pride and the Dyke March will be even more serious business this year. And even the moments of fun will come in the shadow of sadness and anger. But, in these trying times, perhaps we can all find inspiration in these immortal lines celebrating love, sex, and rock n roll:

She was a fast machine
She kept her motor clean
She was the best damn woman I had ever seen
She had the sightless eyes
Telling me no lies
Knockin’ me out with those American thighs
Taking more than her share
Had me fighting for air
She told me to come but I was already there
‘Cause the walls start shaking
The earth was quaking
My mind was aching
And we were making it and you

Shook me all night long
Yeah you shook me all night long
