HONK! Fest West is extending its reach to Capitol Hill.

The free outdoor music festival started in Seattle in 2008, and this year it runs from June 16 to 19 with a visit to Capitol Hill in the middle. Capitol Hill will have its day Friday with professional brass bands playing free live concerts at four locations on the Hill. Festival organizer Mike Antares estimates that about 26 bands will play on the Hill.

“HONK! Fest is about the accessibility of music, which is why they’re in parks, streets, and public spaces,” Antares said.

This is the first year that the festival has included Capitol Hill. Festival organizers were brainstorming earlier in the year about how to reach out to other communities in the Seattle area. “Capitol Hill was at the top of the list,” said Antares.

Brass bands will be playing at four locations on Capitol Hill: from 4-6 PM at 12th Ave Square Park, from 6-10 PM at Cal Anderson Park, from 5:30-9:30 PM at Seattle Central, and from 5:30-9:30 PM at the intersection of Broadway and Denny, outside of Capitol Hill Station.

One band to watch for is Environmental Encroachment, currently scheduled to play at 6:30 PM in Cal Anderson and 8:30 PM outside the light rail station.

“They’re almost a circus act written musically,” said Antares. “They’ll get the crowd involved, kids involved — they’re a real treat.”

Antares said that the event is totally free, totally volunteer-run, and still looking for more people to help. “There are no cordoned off areas, no wristbands, no cover charge,” he said. “We would love to see our Capitol Hill community come out in force at a time when things feel really hard for some people.”
