Seattle Parks says 2016 Cal Anderson Independence Day Picnic a go

The route to saving Capitol Hill’s Independence Day picnic wasn’t pretty but it was apparently successful. Seattle Parks has announced that the 14th edition of the free community event will go on.

July 4th in Cal Anderson from noon to 4 PM, Parks and Rec has rallied to pull together free hot dogs for the first 500 people, a David Bowie Look-A-Like Contest, drag performance by Ms. Ryannah Doll, a Space Oddity Kids Costume Parade (“come dressed in your best outer space look”), face painting for kids, “and more!”

14th annual Capitol Hill Independence Day Community Picnic

To start June, CHS reported on the announcement from Seattle Parks that a new organizer was needed after that the longtime sponsor of the event, the Cal Anderson Park Alliance, had opted out of organizing the 2016 picnic. After a sparsely attended community meeting — two citizens were outnumbered by two city reps, and six media — and a terse response from CAPA about how Parks had gone about “saving” the picnic, the city is moving forward with the event. We’ve reached out for more information about new sponsors and organizers and will update if we hear back.

In the meantime, Randy Wiger of parks said the Saturday, July 4th event still needs help on the volunteer front. Contact [email protected] or 206-684-0775 if you can help. Wiger previously said Parks was ready to put up around $1,500 to put on the event. CAPA said in past years, the budget for the annual picnic ranged between $7,500 and $15,000. 2016 sponsors include Seattle Parks and Rec, Seattle law firm Enslow Martin, and event producers Active Entertainment.
