In a neighborhood crunched for arts spaces that arts groups can actually afford, the REBATEnsemble might present a few useful lessons.
Bringing “engaging theatre to unconventional spaces,” the “Recession-Era Broke-Ass Theatre Ensemble” has learned how to stage even the greatest works of performance without a stage. Or a theater, for that matter.
The group’s latest work is being performed in Volunteer Park through Labor Day weekend. While Shakespeare in Volunteer Park usually sticks to the amphitheater, the location for REBATE’s latest work is listed as “the grove.”
Director Tom Dang says a combination of passion from the performers and creative staff and donations keep the company moving. Tickets are $15 but you’ll be on the honor system in Volunteer Park’s grove.
