Seattle’s annual Park(ing) Day is one of the truest expressions of “the city as your living room.” This year’s event, which asks residents and businesses to re-envision how parking spaces and sidewalks can be used with small pop-up parks, has been extended to two days, will feature nine projects on Capitol Hill, and many more around the city.
Park(ing) Day Plus+ 2016 will be held Friday, September 16th and Saturday, September 17th from 10 AM – 7 PM. The deadline for registering an event has passed, but attend this year for some ideas on what to do in 2017. Typically held on a weekday, the Seattle Department of Transportation added Saturday to the event to allow as many people to participate as possible.
The full list of events with a map can be found here. This year’s Park(ing) Day will include a “pop-up protected bike lane” on E Pine between Broadway & 10th sponsored by Cascade Bicycle Club. The Capitol Hill EcoDistrict will also be “ReThinking Summit Ave” at Summit and Howell.

Park(ing) Day was born in San Francisco, but the Seattle tradition of celebrating creative use of public streets with tiny “pop-up parks” got its start on Capitol Hill. The first Seattle Park(ing) Day took place in 2009 along E Pine.
Th event has also helped lead to more long-lasting experiments in urban space with the creation of the first parklet in Seattle on Capitol Hill in 2012.
