UPDATE — Here is an update from SPD on the incident:
A 17-year-old was wounded Monday in a shooting near 23rd Avenue and East Cherry Street. Police were called to the Garfield Teen Life Center just before 4 PM after the victim walked into the Center with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. The suspect–described as black male in his mid-to-late teens, 5’5, wearing a black and white polo shirt and black jeans–fled the area following the shooting. Officers, a K9 team, and Gang Unit detectives are searching for the suspect and investigating the incident.
UPDATE 9/13/16 9:10 AM: SPD says there have been no arrests in Monday’s shooting investigation. Meanwhile, here are more details about an incident referenced in the comments below that also caused a lockdown and security precautions at area schools. Monday afternoon, police and SWAT units fanned out around E Pike and First Hill searching for a man who was reported to have made threats in multiple incidents in the area and claimed to be carrying a grenade. Officers searched for the man for about two hours including sweeps inside area hospitals and the First Hill McDonald’s. The suspect was eventually identified but not located and the search shifted to the area near his downtown residence. Around 6:15 PM Monday, police took the man into custody without incident. He was booked on investigation of harassment and his currently jailed. No grenade was found.
Just like in 2008. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Damn, I left garfield community center right before that
Glad you did!
Was this related to the lockdown at SAAS and NWS and the guy with a grenade on Madison or is it just crazy day in the neighborhood?
Unrelated
I recall a murder happened right on the doorsteps of that place when it first opened.
I do not know exactly how to say this without sounding unsympathetic to both incidents. I am sympathetic to both. It feels like anything that would make the CD feel unsafe is reported and something that would cause the private school area of Capitol Hill/CD feel a bit weird is not reported. Or maybe the guy did not really have a grenade. Or maybe it is due to the public operations of the one in the CD. The exact circumstances are very different in the incidents. I suppose the next question is for the Parks Department, especially in the light of the the comment by bb. Does any one of the the Teen Life Centers operated by the City have more violent incidents than others? If so, what type of preventative action can be taken to keep the centers and the communities around them safe?
I honestly am a little confused about why the other incident wasn’t at least mentioned in any news outlet I could find. With two schools on the hill being locked down, there had to be something important happening, but I scoured the local media and the SPD blotter and couldn’t find anything regarding the guy with the grenade. I only know about it because a friend whose kids are at SAAS forwarded me the email from that school. Weird.
The didn’t locate the man and the search shifted away from this area. I’ll check for updates because they had made progress in identifying. It’s probably worthy of an update when I get more but the incident from what I know of it at this point was only newsworthy due to SPD’s heavy response. No weapon was seen, report was based on a threat, the man was exhibiting crisis/mental/drug behavior.
Can someone please tell us what the “grenade” episode was? I keep seeing references to it but never any info.
I’ve added an update above. The lockdown and security precautions I’m aware of took place at Northwest School and Seattle U.
Thank you for the update.
