The teenage victim in a reported shooting near 23rd and Jefferson fled inside the nearby Garfield Community Center Garfield Teen Life Center Monday afternoon just before 4 PM.

Police were searching the area for a suspect described fleeing the scene.

The victim, reported to be a male in his teens, suffered a gunshot wound to the arm according to preliminary reports. UPDATE: SPD confirms that a 17-year-old male was shot in the arm in the incident and was transported to Harborview for treatment.

Though classes had been dismissed before the shooting occurred, the Garfield High campus was placed on lockdown during the search.

Multiple shell casings were found by police near the playground behind the community center.

UPDATE — Here is an update from SPD on the incident:

A 17-year-old was wounded Monday in a shooting near 23rd Avenue and East Cherry Street. Police were called to the Garfield Teen Life Center just before 4 PM after the victim walked into the Center with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. The suspect–described as black male in his mid-to-late teens, 5’5, wearing a black and white polo shirt and black jeans–fled the area following the shooting. Officers, a K9 team, and Gang Unit detectives are searching for the suspect and investigating the incident.

UPDATE 9/13/16 9:10 AM: SPD says there have been no arrests in Monday’s shooting investigation. Meanwhile, here are more details about an incident referenced in the comments below that also caused a lockdown and security precautions at area schools. Monday afternoon, police and SWAT units fanned out around E Pike and First Hill searching for a man who was reported to have made threats in multiple incidents in the area and claimed to be carrying a grenade. Officers searched for the man for about two hours including sweeps inside area hospitals and the First Hill McDonald’s. The suspect was eventually identified but not located and the search shifted to the area near his downtown residence. Around 6:15 PM Monday, police took the man into custody without incident. He was booked on investigation of harassment and his currently jailed. No grenade was found.
