Down Pour aims to be new off-Broadway coffee spot

Capitol Hill’s coffee scene may have a neighborhood vibe but you’re still most likely to find cafes on the main drags like Broadway or Pike and Pine. Down Pour, born in Redmond two years ago, is expanding to Capitol Hill, opening on Monday just off Broadway on the ground floor of the Rubix Apartments at 515 Harvard Ave. E.

Down Pour owners Steve and Ronni Fields didn’t have plans to expand out of Redmond, but the owner of the building approached them about opening a location there.

“We spent a lot of time here and really got excited about the idea,” Steve said.

While Down Pour may be located off of the main drag, the Fields want the shop to be for all of the neighborhood, not just Rubix residents. In a novel setup for most commercial spaces inside the Hill’s wave of new developments, the Fieldses have arranged for the Rubix lobby to be available for customers to hang out and linger.

The couple opened Down Pour in Redmond a couple years ago, but Ronni has 25 years of experience in the industry including running a stand before opening Down Pour. Down Pour’s beans come from Sleepy Monk Coffee Roasters in Cannon Beach, Oregon, and along with espresso drinks and drip coffee, customers can expect to find tea and chai and breakfast sandwiches, salads and baked goods brought in from other eateries. After the first of the year, they also plan to start serving wine and beer, so hours may be extended some days.

“We’re adding something a little bit different to Capitol Hill regarding coffee shops,” Steve Fields said. “It’s a place to spend time.”

Down Pour Capitol Hill is located at 515 Harvard Ave E. It is open 6 AM to 6 PM weekdays, from 7 AM to 6 PM on Saturdays and from 7 AM to 5 PM on Sundays. You can learn more at facebook.com/downpourcoffeebar.

Huh, is that the space previously occupied by CoCA’s ancillary gallery? Nice location for that, if people know it’s there.
