Police investigate after woman found shot in leg at Melrose and Roy

A woman was shot in the leg in early morning gun violence near the Melrose foot trail on the northwest corner of Capitol Hill.

Police were called to the area just after 2 AM Wednesday morning to a report of one shot fired and sounds of a man and woman yelling. Officers arrived to find the female victim down at E Roy and Melrose. The suspect was described by the victim as a white male, around 30 years old, 5’10″, 150 pounds, wearing a gray trench coat but police were unable to find anybody in the area matching that description.

As police fanned out across the area near the homeless encampments along the trail, they encountered one male and took him into custody without incident. Another male reported he had been stabbed in the hand and was treated at the scene.

UPDATE: We’re trying to confirm a few details from the shooting but a SPD spokesperson said the situation has some confusing elements that are being worked out as they try to determine whether the suspected shooter was in custody. Stay tuned.

UPDATE x2: Here is SPD’s take on the incident. Still no arrests.

Detectives are investigating after a woman was shot by an acquaintance in the Capitol Hill neighborhood Wednesday morning. Police receive reports of a shooting at 2:15 am Monday near the intersection of Melrose Avenue East and East Roy Street, where officers found a 30-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her leg. The woman said the suspect had run off towards the Melrose trail, where officers quickly found a man matching the description. The victim was unable to verify whether he was the same person who had shot her, though police later learned the man may have played a role in the incident. The woman’s boyfriend fled the scene before police arrived, and officers were unable to contact him following the incident. Officers interviewed the victim at Harborview Medical Center, where she was being treated for non-life threatening injuries, and based on the information she provided now believe the victim and suspect know each other. Detectives are asking anyone with information in this case to please call the violent crime tip line at (206) 233-5000.

Police and a K9 unit continued searching for the reported shooter and were also searching for the victim’s boyfriend who was reportedly near the encampment area.

The victim was taken to Harborview for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.
