Here are some things to catch up on and stories you may have missed from the longgggg holiday break. Happy 2017!
- A seagull reportedly knocked out power — and part of the Peach Bowl broadcast — in Pike/Pine. Note to Husky fans: You didn’t miss anything.
- Midtown Center: CHS broke the news that shopping center developer Regency Centers has a deal to buy the 23rd and Union Midtown Center block with Africatown as a partner. Wednesday night brings the first design review for the block of seven-story buildings destined to rise at the corner. We reported here on the community’s first thoughts on the project’s planned grocery, pharmacy, and 400+ market-rate and affordable apartment units and Africatown’s role in the block’s path to redevelopment here. In the meantime, safety concerns are also high after another shooting incident at the shopping center property.
- Seattle Central is seeking bids to develop two Broadway properties — the Atlas / Broadway Café building in the 1500 block of Broadway, and the South Annex/ International Programs building at Pine and Broadway. Both are likely to qualify for landmark protections.
- Speaking of Capitol Hill landmarks, we said goodbye to the Value Village-REI-Kelly Springfield building as we know it with a final hurrah before the Christmas holiday.
- Marmite and Katsu Burger: Capitol Hill lunches are getting a 2017 upgrade. Marmite’s walk-up in Chophouse Row is now open and serving Bruce and Sara Naftaly’s bone-warming broths and soups. Meanwhile, Katsu Burger’s Capitol Hill expansion made a last week of 2016 debut on 12th Ave.
- The SPD report on the deadly collision that took the life of a 79-year-old Capitol Hill man in September was released.
- The Washington Attorney General sued photographer Matt Hickey adding allegations of consumer protection violations to charges of rape already faced by the former Capitol Hill resident.
- DUI stops on and around Capitol Hill were up in December.
- Seattle’s homeless “navigation center” is delayed and missed its deadline for operations.
- Retrofit Home, an E Pike retail longtimer, said Pike/Pine business was good and the neighborhood seems to have recovered nicely from years of construction.
- CHS celebrated Capitol Hill Station’s first Christmas of service. Only a long service outage for the station’s platform escalator could dampen the spirit.
