Serious crash tangles John near Capitol Hill Station

One person had to be cut from a crashed vehicle and police were investigating after a two-vehicle collision at John and 10th tied up rush hour traffic and added to street safety concerns on the increasingly busy streets around Capitol Hill Station. There was also a report of a pedestrian possibly injured in the crash.

UPDATE: ‪SFD says patient removed from the crashed car was a female in her 30s. Her injuries were reported as not life threatening. The report of a pedestrian injured in the crash was apparently a mistake in the early confusion at the crash scene.

Seattle Fire was called to the scene around 5:20 PM to a report of the collision. One victim was removed from a car involved in the crash by a fire crew that sliced through the vehicle’s roof.

Police were at the scene to close off John to traffic and begin the investigation of the collision. UPDATE 3/23/2017 9:00 AM: A department spokesperson tells CHS the initial response to the scene was quickly downgraded after the situation as sorted out and a full traffic collision investigation was not necessary due in part to the lack of any serious injuries. There did not appear to be any citations issued to drivers of either of the two vehicles involved in the crash.

The intersection is part of an area identified for pedestrian and street safety improvements. SDOT began gathering feedback on proposed improvements including curb bulbs and plastic posts for the John Thomas corridor this week. Meanwhile, CHS reported that the city has also decided to add left turn lanes on John and E Olive Way at Broadway as well as add an all-way crosswalk at Broadway and Denny after a car struck a pedestrian and other near misses were reported near the busy transit station.

This intersection NEEDS TO A PRIORITY. So many close calls everyday. So many people running red lights!!

And the left-turning cars! They’re only looking for a break in the oncoming traffic…as soon as they see one, they gun it through, without regard for pedestrians in the crosswalk!

Was wondering why the annoying as fuck helicoper has been circling overhead. Hope everyone is ok

Honestly…SPD needs to just camp there for a week or two…as others have stated on this and other articles – the number of people gunning it through red here seems to be the norm. I sure know I see it almost every time when I get off for the night commute.

Aside from this intersection, and obviously this is also anecdotal…but it sure seems like the city in general has had a major uptick in people running red lights, and I’ve still never seen anyone pulled over for such an infraction.

There is a red light camera in the intersection, for what it’s worth–people do get tickets. It doesn’t really seem to help though.

@bicoastal That intersection’s red-light camera is not currently active.

@woonerf – That is interesting, how can you tell that? Because it doesn’t flash at night?

There is no light at the intersection of 10th & John, but I agree that red-light running has become a common occurrence in Seattle. Entitled people think their time is more important than safety. And what time do they save?…..about 1-2 minutes, at most.

SPD has no interest, and hasn’t for a long time, in enforcing any traffic laws, to the detriment of pedestrians.

And while I hate to play this card, but the large influx of out of state people, moving in from states where aggressive driving is the norm, hasn’t helped the situation much.

Agreed about people running the red light… but this intersection is a block away with no traffic lights. Kinda looks like the driver rear-ended a van at the stop sign. Glad to hear the injuries are not life-threatening, and I wish the person the best for recovery.

The problem with 10th & John is that people are focused on the light ahead of them, often speeding up to make the light, with little regard to pedestrians and cross-traffic.

There is no stop sign there. But there is a marked crosswalk, so perhaps the van was stopped for a pedestrian, or maybe traffic was backed up.

I drive through here daily and drivers heading East on John do race though and around once they’ve made the light – trying to merge back into line once they’ve cleared the light – not realizing that vehicles are stopping for pedestrians crossing at 10th and John.

I’ve stopped many times for a pedestrian and the driver races around me on the right to realize that there is a person in their way.

The left turn lights at Broadway and John will limit though traffic to 1 lane (no racing around or merging). This will be a huge help. As will curb bulbs at 10th and John.

The race-around happens far too often; that and honking as soon as I touch my breaks. People are so damned impatient; especially going down 12th. I’m not stopping at non-sign/light intersection just because.

Typo in first sentence: “One person had to be cut of a crashed vehicle”
I think you mean cut *out* of?
