The future version of Broadway around Capitol Hill Station continues to take shape. A big part of it will be keeping an influx of new residents healthy.

City permits show urgent care and walk-in clinic chain CityMD is planning to take over a restaurant space inside the eclectic Broadway Alley at 219 Broadway E.

The arrival of the New York-based chain marks an escalating war for healthcare dollars on Broadway. In December, CHS reported on a second Broadway Zoom Care clinic making plans to open in a new retail space across from Capitol Hill Station in the Hollywood Lofts building. Yes, the new Broadway will have a minute clinic next door to Dick’s.

While ridership has boomed in Capitol Hill Station’s first year, the economic impact on the immediate neighborhood is less certain. As the new station opened, business owners said they were worried about rising rents and displacement just as Broadway recovers from years of major construction. The influx of urgent care and clinic providers has joined with existing dental clinics to tip healthcare firmly into bonafide “trend” status.

Like the Zoom Care project, the CityMD work is in early permitting. It will add to the mixed array of businesses that have put the old Broadway Alley mall to use including restaurants Hana, Americana, Kimchi Bistro, Tacos Chukis, and Vaca Loca. It’s not clear which restaurant space CityMD is lined up to fill.

Permits indicate a small, 300-square-foot “outpatient office” is being planned. Company officials have not yet returned our calls about the project.

CHS visited the strange “mixed use” business environs of Broadway Alley in 2012. The building is owned by Ron Amundson who also owns buildings throughout Pike/Pine. He paid $3.7 million for the stuffed-with-tenants Alley in 2008. Next door, the old Charlie’s space remains empty.

CityMD’s expansion to the Puget Sound area has been done in conjunction with Tacoma-based private healthcare provide CHI Franciscan Health. In 2015, the combination opened up the partnership’s first CityMD location in the area in Ravenna. There is also a location in Kent and another planned for West Seattle.
