The busiest 80 square feet on Broadway makes room for expansive Kosmic Koffee

The busiest 80 square feet of cafe space on Broadway is back in action. And entrepreneur Anthony Davis has plans to cram even more into the little coffee shack in the midst of the hustle and bustle on Capitol Hill’s main drag.

Kosmic Koffee debuted for a sneak peek over Pride weekend marking yet another incarnation for the coffee shack at the corner of Broadway and Harrison. Regular hours are coming soon.

“We were driving down Broadway and saw the stand. It was a two hour decision process after I saw the sign,” Davis tells CHS about the “go go” nature of his latest venture. Davis also is part of Anslinger Capital, an “emerging market fund, focused on the legal cannabis market,” and venture capital concern Monition Partners. With those kinds of entrepreneurial roots, you can expect more from Kosmic than cups of coffee.

“I have a farm with chickens so I’m also selling farm fresh eggs,” Davis said. He’s already got a brand for the eggs thought up: Just Got Laid.

More unusual menu items are to come.

The Broadway coffee shack has spun through a few owners since longtimer TNT Espresso closed in 2016. The last version shuttered earlier this year when Let It Bean closed amid a challenging business environment.

For Davis, Kosmic is a chance to reconnect with the neighborhood where he was born — and to get back into the coffee business. He tells CHS he operated a coffee kiosk in Bellevue Square Mall when he was 19. His latest venture is likely to be part of a much more interesting environment.

Food+drink notes

Robertson in 2012 (Image: CHS)

  • BREAKING PASTRY NEWS: Crumble and Flake has a new owner. CHS was there for the birth of Crumble and Flake in 2012. We teased pastry savant Neil Roberston’s Caipirinha macaroons, cinnamon rolls, vanilla cream puffs, and a “smoked paprika croissant and rhubarb financier.” Congratulations to Robertson on new things — and best of luck to new Crumble and Flake owner Toby Matasar who opened the gluten free cafe Niche on 12th Ave in 2015.
  • CHS broke the news on Sun Liquor’s plans to move its distillery off Capitol Hill and the limbo status of its Pike bar. Summer has come and the distillery is a goner — and Sun has closed the bar… so far without a buyer or partner to take over.
  • We’ve received a lot of tips about the signs up at 10th and Miller in the challenging but hope-filled restaurant space previously home to Ethiopian joint Abay. The opening has been a slowly developing affair, but we’ve heard from the restaurant family behind La Santa and they tell CHS the new place is coming “soon.” Las Santa will be “a 100% family restaurant “with the best quality using prime meats and our organic vegetables.” “It is a different style of Mexican food where we will cook instantly when the customer asks for,” the La Santa folks tell us. The meaty offergins will be accompanied by “authentic Mexican drinks, like our casuelas and jicaras that will be something new in the area.”
  • Now open in the former Pronto Coffee space on 15th Ave E: Capital D Cafe. “Family owned “Capital D Cafe” is famous for it’s freshly brewed coffee, delicious panini and it’s divine crepes made from a secret European recipe,” they say.
  • New development around 23rd and Madison means new food and drink opportunities. We’ll tell you more about a new coffee shop coming to one of the new projects shortly. In the meantime, the new building opening across the street from the E Madison Safeway will feature… big brand pizza!
