Stumptown E Pine set for closure

(Images: Stumptown)

Last summer, the Big Coffee(tm)-owned indie chain stopped roasting beans on 12th Ave. Later this summer, Stumptown will close its E Pine cafe to focus on its remaining Capitol Hill location.

The coffee industry-focused folks at Sprudge confirmed the news sent to CHS Tuesday morning by employees and customers that August 20th will be the final day for the E Pine cafe that neighbors Rudy’s and the Capitol Loans pawn shop. Sprudge reports that a company spokesperson tells them Stumptown “made the painful, yet considered decision to focus our efforts on our 12th Street cafe and our operations within the Seattle market.”

Stumptown became a wholly owned subsidiary of Peets Coffee and Tea in 2015 after the coffee chain obtained a partial ownership in 2011.

Peets is owned by JAB Holdings. JAB’s portfolio includes a minority stake in the consumer products company Reckitt Benckiser,[5] a majority stake in Coty, Inc., a majority stake in Peet’s Coffee & Tea, a majority stake in Caribou Coffee Company, a majority stake in Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE), a majority stake in Einstein Noah Restaurant Group, and a majority stake in Jimmy Choo Ltd.[6][7][8][9] JAB also owns Bally, Belstaff, Zagliani, Espresso House and Baresso Coffee A/S. Krispy Kreme, Keurig.

No, you just blew up my worldview! It’s local coffee from Portland! I am a better person because I drink this coffee. Next you’ll be telling me Apple is a big corporation and not an artisan computer maker.

Not that surprising to me. Since I live close, I tried to like this place. But the coffee was just OK and the customer service was consistently bland and aloof.

actually, “no one likes you” – you are what is wrong with this neighborhood. People are allowed to not like a specific type of coffee. Learn some tolerance and quit judging others based on consumerism.

I think what Clayton was trying to say is that Stumptown stopped being a local/northwest (Portland)-based company a while ago, when it was purchased by a huge German conglomerate that owns dozens of companies in America and Europe. They own Krispy Kreme, Tully’s, Caibou Coffee, the Panera Bread chain, Einstein’s Bagels, Noah’s Bagels, Keurig (those machines and coffee “pods”), Coty, and a big stake in a company that makes Woolite, Calgon, Air Wick, Lysol, Clearasil, Mucinex, etc. Through their ownership of Peet’s Coffee & Tea they’ve purchased high end coffee shops, including Intelligentsia and Stumptown…so that local news will report “this local chain was purchased by Peet’s Coffee” instead of “this local chain was purchased by German conglomerate JAB Holdings” which doesn’t sound as nice.

Speaking of coffee: Justin, you gave us a teaser a few weeks ago that there was going to be a new cafe opening in one of the new developments around Madison and 23rd, with more info to come soon. Has the time come when you can share? If it’s good and it’s in the blue/white/gray Hamilton Apts building down below 23rd then it could change my life. Thanks!
