Capitol Hill food+drink | A Pizza Mart pizza bar coming to Pike/Pine

Some things never change. The projects may be smaller in scale (well, mostly smaller) but the Capitol Hill food and drink economy continues to be a dynamic world with plenty of new players and new stories. And, naturally, some pillars of the industry continue to grow.

Yup, Pike/Pine is being lined up for a new pizza bar.

The rapidly expanding A Pizza Mart empire is making plans for a new pie bar on 11th Ave, CHS has learned.

The new project is being planned in the Modera building, the six-story development from Mill Creek Residential Tetris-ed into a block of Pike/Pine between 10th and 11th Aves and Pike and Union. The company was founded way back in 1996 and operated its longtime Stewart location before a small wave of new openings including the University District, West Seattle, and First Hill.

The company is getting back to us on our questions about the “Pizza Mart 11th” project but expect the basic recipe of pizza and booze. The project will create the second pizza bar on the block — Big Mario’s is around the corner on E Pike. Or you can walk another block to the south and visit Sizzle Pie. In 2016, Capitol Hill’s already rich pizza economy boomed with a wave of openings as owners pursued higher margin, more easily scaled concepts. Big Mario’s meanwhile, won’t take the new development sitting down — the 2010-born pizza joint from Dave Meinert and the guys behind Lost Lake has filed plans with the city to expand into a portion of the Caffe Vita bean warehouse next door.

Meanwhile, there’s no announced date for A Pizza Mart 11th’s debut.

Capitol Hill Food and Drink Notes

  • RIP Toscana. Welcome Itto’s Moroccan Tapas.

  • The block’s demolition caused one of the biggest freakouts in Capitol Hill history. The first commercial tenant — chain World of Beers — added to the drama before its independent successor also called it quits in 2016. But there is some hopefully good news for “500 East” Pine. The company behind across-the-street Canadian import Suika is hard at work on a rebuild of the former World of Beers space to open a new project — Tamari Bar.
  • Sun Liquor’s decision to move production off the Hill left its E Pike bar space open for a new life. Capitol Hill should be excited that I-Miun Liu is expanding his presence in the neighborhood’s food and drink community. Liu opened a new Oasis bubble tea shop on E Pine last year after two years of planning. The owner of the ID’s Eastern Cafe and board member of Seattle’s Ethnic Business Coalition will open East Trading Company in the old Sun Liquor space.

  • Seattle Met broke the news earlier this year that the connoisseurs at Analog Coffee were working on “a breakfast and lunch spot” to take over the ill-fated Resto space around the corner. B-Side Foods is now open — weekends only — at 421 E Thomas. You can learn more at bside.cool, naturally. Order the fish toast, apparently.
  • CHS never gave a proper sendoff to chef Eric Stapelman who spent a tumultuous few years trying to leave his mark on Capitol Hill — first in Japanese, then in French — before shuttering the E Pine restaurant last year. Coming next: more Capitol Hill noodles. Welcome incoming Ramen Danbo.

  • Purr is planning a September reopening in its new Montlake home.
  • In case you missed it, Purr’s  11th Ave replacement will be a new project from Joey Burgess and Dave Meinert — “inclusive gathering space” Queer/Bar.
  • Meanwhile, also this summer: Stumptown E Pine closed, Modern Steep closed to focus on its online business, and the glossy Redhook Brewlab finally opened on E Pike. Annnd probably some other stuff. Let us know.
  • Oh, here’s another summer story. Manu’s Bodegita closed down in the storied walk-up along E Madison it called home for about a year. Old news now but next for the space is Westman’s Bagels and Coffee, a New York–Style Bagel Counter from small space genius Monica Dimas and baker Molly Westman.
  • After our story this week on Quentin Ertel’s decision to close the kitchen at The Saint and double down on the tequila bar end of his business, we heard a couple questions from readers about an interesting liquor license application posted that involved the nightlife entrepreneur and The Canterbury. We’re told there’s nothing to the application — that deal fell through. But anybody interested in owning the classic 15th Ave E tavern, here is your chance.
  • A sad farewell — and congratulations — to Neil Robertson. CHS was there in 2012 when the much-loved Crumble and Flake first opened its doors on E Olive Way. The pastry chef will hopefully enjoy sleeping in more often after selling the respected sweet shop.
  • After getting more acquainted with the neighborhood with pop-ups, R&M Dessert Bar has a brick and mortar home lined up in new construction at Pike and Belmont. Rod Gambassi and Marc Adams plan to open the new sweets and booze bar by “early October” with “visually impressive desserts that also manage to be delicious” and cocktails. Judging by the weekend crowd at Pie Bar and Hot Cakes, booze + dessert is a growth industry.

Even more (admittedly underwhelming) pizza news…there’s a Domino’s currently under construction at 22nd and Madison by Planned Parenthood. An ironic location for anyone familiar with the politics of the chain’s founder.
