Pike closed for apartment unit hazmat response — UPDATE

Concerns about a possible hazardous substance inside a fifth floor apartment unit brought out a large response from Seattle Fire and closed Pike to traffic Monday night.

All details at this point are not confirmed but according to Seattle Fire and police radio dispatches, emergency units were called to the Villa Apartments building at Pike and Boren around 7:12 PM to an initial report of “illegal drug activity” and a possible cooking fire inside a unit on the building’s fifth floor.

With Pike closed to traffic during the response, a SFD hazmat team went in to investigate the situation. Readings for hazardous material was reported as “zero,” according to SFD radio. Pike was reopened to traffic just before 8:30 PM. UPDATE 8:37 PM: A department spokesperson confirms that no hazardous substance was found.

We are not aware of any reported injuries.

The 62-unit, 1908-built Villa Apartments building is operated by Capitol Hill Housing and is also home to ground-floor retail tenants Tango and sibling bar Rumba.
