Itto’s Tapas makes a November change on Summit with boquerones, stuffed dates, zaalook, and dolmes

A tapas and cocktails lounge is replacing a longtime Summit Ave restaurant but there are lots of reasons to be excited and zero reasons to be sad about this Capitol Hill change.

“We actually aren’t new to the summit area, the owner, Khalid Agour, has owned Toscana since 1999,” general manager of the new joint Devrim Øzkan tells CHS. “It has always been a dream of his to have a throwback to his Moroccan roots that highlight some of the foods he grew up with.”

Itto’s Tapas — really, Itto’s Tapas 2 — will celebrate its grand opening Tuesday at 601 Summit Ave E, the space formerly home to Toscana until it shuttered late this summer to make way for the new project. Don’t worry — its closure marks only a minor setback in Hill’s wave of pizza domination.

The Itto’s opening comes two years to the day after the Agour brothers opened the first Itto’s in West Seattle. Our friends at the West Seattle Blog helped them celebrate their first anniversary last November. Late November is also a bittersweet time for the family as it marks the anniversary of the passing of the family’s matriarch and restaurant namesake, Khalid and Aziz Agour’s mother Itto.

The venture has done well by her name. In West Seattle, Itto’s Moroccan and Spanish tapas have developed a solid following with a menu bursting with boquerones, paella, tagines, stuffed dates, zaalook, skewers, meatballs, and dolmes along with cocktails, wine, and Moroccan beer.

The plan on Capitol Hill is to bring the neighborhood “the same cocktails and the same love of our community.”

The new life for the Toscana space is neighbored by food and drink spot Single Shot, the original and only remaining Capitol Hill Sun Liquor, and Top Pot. UPDATE: And the Summit Pub!

“What we found in West Seattle was that the small neighborhood lent itself to the intimate, cozy experience we strive for. Summit has exactly that, a small space with a larger city right around the corner,” Øzkan writes. “Our neighbors are amazing and we are so excited to bring a piece of our home to it.”

Itto’s Tapas is located at 601 Summit Ave E. Hours are Sunday through Thursday, 4 PM to “12ish,” happy hour: open to 5 PM, 11 PM to 12, Fridays and Saturdays: 4 PM to “1ish,” happy hour: open to 5 PM and 11PM to 12 AM. You can learn more at ittostapas.com.
