CHS Pics | Creatura House roars (and barks) to life on Capitol Hill

E Pike’s Creatura House celebrated its grand opening this weekend with a party that included neighborhood artists and creators — and plenty of the animal spirit behind the new gallery and shop from Rog La Rue creator Kirsten Anderson.

CHS stopped by Saturday as Creatura House marked its first days of business with a cute fuzzy buddy contest and visitors getting their first look at the gallery and its debut show from Montreal painter Peter Ferguson.

Anderson and business partner Mark Long describe the new space as “a small gallery featuring rotating shows as well as shop focused on home decor and design” —

Our shop will feature art, decor, and objects of desire by Electric Coffin, Scott Musgrove, Adam Wallacavage, Jonquil and Mr Black, Ben Beres, Justin Beckman, and Debra Baxter to name a few. Some of the things we will have will be tentacles chandeliers, tiny lamps carried by ghost mice, raw crystal necklaces, flocked totemic “trophies”, faux black and gold taxidermy, zebra print rugs, Bowls that look like lunar surfaces, day globe mexican embroidered pillows, silver skulls, biographies of Nick Cave and David Bowie, coffee table books by historic nature photographers, tropical orchids, and a life sized golden rhinestone covered cougar.

Creatura House will also donate proceeds to Creatura Wildlife Projects, a 501(c)3 non profit started by Anderson that is currently helping efforts in Kenya to protect endangered wildlife.

“I thought this was a good time to step out and explore other things I want to do,” Anderson said about her time traveling before returning to Seattle to open Creatura House. “I really missed having a space here in Seattle, being a part of the community. I had really gotten into home decor, and pulled in fine arts.”

Creatura House is located at 705 E Pike. It is open Wednesdays through Sundays, 11 AM to 6 PM. You can learn more at creatura.house.

Am I the only one who sees a disconnect between the zebra skin and the store’s wildlife conservation efforts?

Why sell fake hunting trophies? that seems like a weird thing to have in a shop that’s supposedly about conservation. I’m sure the owner will say because it’s fake but they are still catering to the weird desire to own the corpse of an animal.
