Capitol Hill Station Development – A drone’s view of the land around the Capitol Hill station gives a new perspective of where new apartment buildings will be constructed.
Comicon 2017 – As most Star Wars fans could attest, seeing Han Solo and a stormtrooper hand in hand is a unique sight. That, however, is the beauty of Comicon, juxtaposition, the unexpected, and unique combinations of cosplay and real life.
D’ La Santa – A new, family style Mexican restaurant opened in far North Capitol Hill.
Durkan Swearing In – Jenny Durkan is sworn in by Federal Judge Richard Jones at the Ethiopian Community Center in South Seattle. Ed Murray’s run for re-election, and eventually his term as mayor were cut short after a fifth person stepped forward accusing him of sexual assault. Bruce Harrell and Tim Burgess each held the position temporarily. Eventually, after months of non stop campaigning and fundraising, Jenny Durkan won Seattle’s mayoral race as the first woman mayor in 100 years and first out lesbian mayor in Seattle’s history.
DeWolf wins Election – Zachary Pullin DeWolf, an indigenous tribal member and longtime Capitol Hill resident, won his first public election, as a member of Seattle’s School Board. He celebrated the win with his husband Derek DeWolf at Optimism Brewery on Capitol Hill.
Freeway Park Planting – A hidden gem of a public space got a makeover with the help of a few engaged citizens. The Freeway Park Association along with Seattle Parks Department coordinated with concerned citizens and planted tulips and daffodils near Seneca Plaza.
Hilloween neighborhood – The Stevens neighborhood kept with Halloween tradition by dressing up their homes with lights, inflatable, spiders, and smoke machines, to bring a little magic to Seattle’s little ghouls and goblins.
HRC at Elliott Bay – In the past three years, Bill, Chelsea, and now Hillary, have all visited. This visit, however, wasn’t campaign related, it was simply about What Happened.
Pramila Jayapal at Town Hall – Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal speaks to a concerned Seattle after Donald Trump takes office about issues facing the community.
Light Rail Year 1 – One day before the one-year anniversary of the Capitol Hill Station opening, CHS spent a day at the station, meeting riders, human and animal alike.
May Day 2017 – Changes in May Day traditions led to a different route for the labor and immigration march while the anarchists, anti-fascists, and more radical protest crowd held a block party outside of the King County Juvenile Detention Center, with music loud enough for the kids inside.
MLK 2017 – One of the largest marches in the 35 year history, possibly fueled by by the election of Donald Trump, the annual MLK march was joined by thousands as it wove through Seattle after starting in the Central District.
Neko Cat Cafe – The first of its kind on Capitol Hill, Neko Cat Cafe provides a space for kitties and humans to hang out together and separately with a beer or coffee. It’s also got great windows for the kitty voyeurs with allergies.
Peoples Party Debate – Seattle’s People Party candidate Nikkita Oliver explains the rules of the forum to the final two mayoral candidates. This highly attended event heard challenging questions directed at both candidates as the election loomed just days away.
Pike Pine Halloween – On an unusually dry Halloween weekend, thousands hit the Pike/Pine corridor in costume ranging from gruesome and clowny to pop culture and hyper-local references.
Sinkhole – What could have been a much worse situation, a small sinkhole swallowed the wheel of a car on North Capitol Hill. Seattle City engineers and utility inspectors poured a dye causing the hole to light up bright green.
February Snow Day – A year of more snow than usual started in early January and we visited with those who chose to take their snow day in Cal Anderson Park.
Womxn’s March – One of the largest protest events Seattle has ever seen started in the Central District and would its way through downtown Seattle, ending at Seattle Center before some had left Judkins Park. Some officials say more than 100,000 people attended the event.
