Seattle Schools: Forget arming teachers, kids, let’s march against gun violence

The Seattle Public Schools board will vote on a resolution “calling on state and congressional leaders to take action to prevent any more students and educators from being the victims of a school shooting” and schools leadership will announce its “opposition to arming teachers as a school safety measure” at the SPS board meeting Wednesday night.

Seattle Public Schools is also throwing its support behind the March 24th March for Our Lives protest set to start at Cal Anderson before traveling through the streets to Seattle Center:

March For Our Lives – Seattle

CHS reported here on the March 24th march and other planned actions in Seattle in the wake of the Parkland, Florida high school shooting. Schools and student groups are also planning walkouts during the school day on Wednesday, March 14th — though many of the efforts are being planned as short, symbolic protests.

In the school board resolution, posted below, the board’s proclamation says “gun violence, and threats of gun violence, in schools undermine the sense of security that all students should have in their learning environments” and “gun violence presents a clear and present danger to the students, parents, educators, paraeducators, administrators, and support staff of the Seattle School District.”

Marching is good, boycotts and walkouts are good. Calls to political leaders are good. Social media chatter is good. BUT in fact VOTING is the only thing that will really matter. Get Out The Vote!
