The sight of a changing Capitol Hill: a bit more urban; a bit more vertical; a bit more mixed-use; a lot more expensive. Seattle's increasingly unaffordable housing market is still on my mind, and it got me questioning the value of the lifestyle it provides. The walkability, the access to public transportation, and the neighborhood amenities are alluring reasons to want to live here–reasons why I, myself, enjoy living here. But at what price-point does this quality of life beckon? Is what Capitol Hill or Seattle offers, in terms of both lifestyle and architectural quality of its real estate stock, really worth the steep price? The incessantly increasing cost of living is making many people re-evaluate their aspirations a little closer with their tightened budgets. Mix that with the changing character of the city, and we'll see whose patience wears thin and who ends up staying over time. After over two years living in this city, these questions are speaking louder and louder.
