Beginning in May, you can hike from Broadway to Mount Teneriffe… via Metro

The hike to the summit of Mount Teneriffe takes around four or five hours, and, starting this May, a King County Metro bus ride from Capitol Hill Station.

Starting May 19th, the Trailhead Direct program is expanding with routes connecting Broadway to the Mount Si and Teneriffe trails.

The program began last summer with a popular to Issaquah Alps route that is being extended to Mount Baker Transit Station this year. That service has also been expanded to provide weekend and holiday pick-ups every 30 minutes along its route.

Trailhead Direct includes 19- and 27-seat vans with capacity for two bicycles for each trip. Passengers pay Metro’s standard off-peak adult fare of $2.50 until July, when Metro implements a $2.75 flat fare. In early summer, the Mailbox Peak trailhead will also get Trailhead Direct service from a free satellite parking lot in North Bend.

Mount Si is easily the most popular hiking destination near Seattle with tens of thousands of people making the climb ever year. Teneriffe is a longer route — and a better payoff as you ascend nearly a mile into the sky — that also provides a backdoor route to Si.

The program is the result of a public-private partnership between King County and the Seattle Department of Transportation and is sponsored by REI and Clif Bar.

“We are making it easier than ever to explore the Issaquah Alps without having to own or drive a car,” King County Executive Dow Constantine said in the announcement of the program’s expansion. “Our creative public-private partnership will connect more people and families to the spectacular mountain forests our region is famous for.”

In addition to helping the environment, the bus routes are intended to help ease parking problems at the most popular trailheads as the region’s population continues to boom.

You can view schedules and find more information on the Trailhead Direct site.

FYI, last years Trailhead Direct service didn’t start from Mount Baker, it just did a loop in Issaquah. It’s getting extended to Mount Baker this year.
