CHS Pics | Special Yesler Terrace crew begins work to address Seattle’s affordability crisis

Change is coming for Yesler Terrace. But, in the meantime, weeds keep growing. CHS found this work crew taking it easy on a slowly warming Seattle spring day not far from Washington and Yesler, just off Broadway.

Eventually the land will be home to a huge, mixed-use project from Vulcan set to rise seven stories and make space for 190 or so apartment units and around 2,500 square feet of retail, along with a giant plaza. Vulcan was under contract to purchase three blocks within the Yesler Terrace properties from the city for $22.1 million. As part of the agreement, Vulcan will make 20% of the more than 600 apartment units in the three planned projects available as affordable housing for only renters earning up to 80% of the area’s median income. The rest will be offered at “market rate.”

Like so many things in Seattle’s quest to end its affordability crisis, the project is a log way off from opening. Friday, though the supervisor seemed mostly satisfied, the work crew we found wasn’t getting much done, either. But, at least, there were a few signs of progress.
