Between today’s golden age of frozen treats and the end of the 31 flavors era, there were dark days on Capitol Hill. Then Molly Moon’s opened on E Pine across from Cal Anderson. And there was ice cream.

Thursday, the Seattle chain of scoop shops celebrates its birth 10 years ago in Wallingford:

Hooray! We’re turning 10 this Thursday, May 10, and to celebrate our birthday, we’re giving free scoops to the first 100 customers at each of our shops, which are located in Wallingford, Capitol Hill, Madrona, Queen Anne, University Village, Redmond and Columbia City!

Molly Moon Neitzel opened her Capitol Hill shop a year later in 2009. “Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream is a great local hang-out where families, kids, hipsters, and ice cream addicts alike, can congregate and celebrate their favorite dessert,” the marketing text read.

Today, her headquarters is upstairs inside the Odd Fellows Building above the shop and her ice cream empire has expanded to seven shops and a scoop counter on 19th Ave E at Hello Robin.

Along the way, Neitzel has become a respected small business leader and supporter of efforts around labor issues including sick leave and the minimum wage.

Meanwhile, Capitol Hill now features ice cream of all sorts of scoops and varieties: Sugar Plum, Menchie’sOld School, Cupcake Royale, TroveRachel’s Ginger Beer, and even Chuck’s offer ice cream or frozen soft-serve. Kurt Farm Shop has set a high bar for ice cream deliciousness in Chophouse Row, plant-based ice cream shop Frankie and Jo’s debuted in late 2016, while the Central District Ice Company followed closely behind. And Bluebird Ice Cream is looking for a new Capitol Hill home. But the competition is stiffening.  In January, Full Tilt and its pinball machines brought their game to 15th Ave E. And in February, Portland-based Salt and Straw opened on E Pike only a few blocks away from Molly Moon’s HQ.

Molly Moon’s is located at 917 E Pine. You can learn more at mollymoon.com.

First 100 customers !? That will last about 10mins. If I’m spending money it’s off to salt and straw…
