Capitol Hill’s one-of-a-kind Unicorn planning White Center expansion

Unicorn owner Adam Heimstadt is planning for the longterm. Last summer, the Pike/Pine nightlife entrepreneur purchased a former White Center bowling alley that has been used for everything from a church to a tattoo parlor for $2.45 million.

The Seattle Times reports he has 2019 plans for the project — a new Unicorn:

Unicorn owner Adam Heimstadt said Monday that White Center’s Unicorn will be bigger than his carnival-themed bar on Capitol Hill, 15,000-square feet including two stages for karaoke, drag shows and art exhibits.

King County records show Heimstadt purchased the property last July for $700,000 more than its previous real estate investing owners paid for it in 2006.

We’ve reached out to Heimstadt to learn more about his plans.

Business has apparently been good at the Unicorn, easily the most unique new-era Pike/Pine bar when it debuted in 2010, replacing the Satellite Lounge. “I originally wanted to be a fashion designer,” Heimstadt told CHS at the time. “I ended up being a bartender instead. The past 20 years of creativity are going into this.” In 2012, the bar completed its first expansion — downward — as it opened the subterranean Narwhal below E Pike. Heimstadt’s Unicorn co-founder Paul Blake has since left the partnership.

No word yet if Unicorn’s French circus-theme will continue in White Center but Heimstadt has plenty of time to work it out as he lines up an end of 2019 opening. In the meantime, one of Pike/Pine’s most unique watering holes will remain one-of-a-kind for a bit longer.
