(Images provided by SPD)UPDATE: SPD says they have taken the suspect into custody:

South Precinct Anti-Crime Team officers, with the assistance of the Department of Corrections, identified and arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with the auto theft reported Friday morning. Officers found the suspect at a South Seattle residence and took him into custody without incident.

Original report: Seattle Police are asking for help identifying a man who allegedly stole a BMW left running with a teenage girl inside on Capitol Hill Friday morning.

The suspect reportedly dumped off the teen at an International District park after a frantic ride across the city as the girl texted her mother about the unfolding situation and police attempted to track the vehicle.

He then left the BMW sedan running in a S Maynard parking lotw here he was caught on security camera leaving the area on foot.

The suspect is described as a white male, between 25-35 years old, 5’8″ tall, medium build, wearing a dark colored sweatshirt, blue Seattle Mariner’s cap, and grey sweatpants and black tennis shoes.

SPD says the victim was unharmed though Seattle Fire was called to the scene by police to be treated for a bloodied nose.

The incident began around 10 AM near 10th and E Howe at the E Howe Steps, police say:

The owner of the vehicle was nearby exercising while her 16-year-old daughter was asleep in the running, unlocked BMW. The suspect got into the vehicle and drove away toward the International District. The girl was able to communicate with her mother via text and the mother called 911.

If you have more information about the incident or can help identify the suspect, contact the Seattle Police Robbery Unit at (206) 684-5540.

When will people cease to be idiots? Unlocked, engine running, kid in car? Two people should be arrested here, not one.

#1: I think the mom and daughter already realize that based on what happened. Even with cautions, carjackings still happen. #2: It’s always wrong to blame a victim. #3: The fact that your first thought is to blame a victim says a lot about you.

I don’t blame the victim. I blame her mother. Kid is asleep in the unlocked, running car and mom tells a strange man her daughter is alone and asleep in the car? Why on earth?

Per point 1: A woman who leaves a child in a running unlocked vehicle ain’t a victim, she’s a perpetrator. The child was the victim and no one blames her.

This was deliberate. This is child endangerment (OK a teenager, but still legally a child in most respects) at least. One has a responsibility to act responsible. You can’t build a pool without a fence. You can’t keep a lion as a pet. You cannot irresponsibly endanger a child or you will be held liable. Just because the kid was in a car is not an excuse. As to point number two, if the car was hijacked violently I would never have made this point. Point number three, see point 2.

Assumption 1: She was awake, alert, and sitting at the wheel. All these are false, per the report. Assumption 2: She at least had some training and hopefully a license. Assumption 3: She was willing to drive away and leave her Mother in the same area as the car thief (a possibility).

Nope, your premise is ridiculous under the circumstances. Thanks for playing.
