At least one person was shot in the leg and bullet casings were found spread across the intersection after a volley of gunfire from a vehicle that quickly sped away from 23rd and Spring Tuesday night.
Police and Seattle Fire rushed to the area just before 6:40 PM after multiple reports of shots fired on a night when most of the booms reported to 911 are fireworks.
A swarm of police arrived on 23rd Ave as witnesses reported multiple vehicles speeding from the area and people fleeing on foot. Officers found one male with a gunshot injury to his leg but, according to East Precinct radio dispatches, the victim was not cooperative with police and declined medical treatment.
A male with a bullet wound to his leg arrived at Harborview a short time later. We’re checking to confirm that it was the same victim found at the scene.
Witnesses at 23rd and Spring where officers found multiple shell casings and a building damaged by the gunfire told police they saw a silver car carrying multiple male suspects open fire with one shooter firing a revolver from the backseat and another shooting out of the car’s sunroof.
A search for involved vehicles continued and streets in the area were closed to traffic for a time as police collected evidence at the scene.
The continued gun violence near 23rd and Union comes as redevelopment is set to completely transform the Midtown Center block.

I can’t help but laugh everytime I hear someone complain about how the closure of the Midtown Center is driving out the culture of the CD.
Yeah, bunch of gang violence and dudes loitering is worth preserving. Right.
The Midtown Center is a rotten apple. It should’ve been closed ages ago.
Couldn’t agree more. Midtown Center has been a blight on this neighborhood for years, can’t wait for the redevelopment to finally get underway.
You and me both. I’m getting the sense that the neighborhood is generally ready for this development, and I think newcomers are excited for this project to start/finish.
I’ll be there applauding when the midtown crime center gets town down.

‘Toast the wrecking ball’.. ‘flatten the whole place’.. You still have to deal with The Dollar Store and the Laundry facility, which in my opinion is the main problem. The barbershop isn’t the issue. The folks hanging out at the dollar store in the parking lot after their purchases and folks at the wash house hanging out in the parking lot, folks hanging out by the liquor store, near the bus stop. LOITERING. The CD will always be the CD. You can shine it up all you want and make your changes it will always be the CD. Just because you all have moved in doesn’t mean there will not be any gang violence, it doesn’t mean there wont be any muggings, porch thievery. You live in the CD, you inherit everything that comes along with the CD. Enjoy!
That whole area is going to be torn down, the post office, dollar store, laundry, barbershop, and liquor store. It won’t be an attractive place to loiter or deal when it’s a brand new massive multi use apartment complex with yoga studios, and coffee shops at ground level instead of liquor stores. It can’t happen soon enough, although I’ve noticed that the dealers have already started to move up next to the Union market on 21st.
