‘7 in 72 hours’ — burst of gun violence in the Central District — UPDATE

A spike of gun violence in Seattle including a burst around the Central District has residents asking city officials to do more to quell the outbreak.

Neighbors have tallied “7 in 72 hours” as they tracked gunfire incidents and shootings over social media after two people were shot in an apparent “road rage” assault at 22nd and Pine Wednesday night.

Six more would follow into the weekend including three more bouts of gunfire — near Midtown Center, 28th and Cherry, and 28th and Yesler — in the hours following the 22nd/Pine shooting and a drive-by shooting Friday just before 5 PM near 24th Ave S and Washington in which a teen was reportedly grazed on the backside by a bullet.

Meanwhile, SPD was also investigating shootings and gunfire in other pockets of the city including this shooting Friday in the University District.

In the Central District shootings, injuries have not been life threatening and property damage has been mostly limited to cars targeted in the shootings. Officers investigating in the early moments after the incidents have gotten reports that most of the shootings have involved vehicles, and many of the involved suspects have been described as young males.

Seattle gang detectives have been called to the scenes of the two shootings where people were hit. So far, there have been no reports of immediate arrests.

UPDATE 8/22/2018: SPD is investigating another Central District shooting in which a man was apparently hit and made his way to a First Hill hospital overnight:

SPD Gang Unit detectives are investigating after a 38-year-old man showed up at a First Hill hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Shortly after 1:00 am Wednesday 911 began receiving calls of “shots fired” in the 100 block of 25th Avenue South. East Precinct patrol officers arrived and located several shell casings in the street, but did not locate any victims or witnesses to the shooting. As the scene was being processed, the 38-year-old male victim arrived at Swedish Hospital with one gunshot wound to each arm. The injuries are considered non life-threatening. The victim declined to provide patrol officers or detectives with information about the incident. Gang Unit detectives continue to investigate.

Just like in the past, SPD needs to ramp up patrol in these areas – not just when there are reports of gunshots. They are fully aware of which areas are the trouble spots. If there is a presence, those who are doing the shooting are less likely to.

SPD is underfunded and understaffed. Also, law enforcement is mean and marginalizes people, so we aren’t really doing that in Seattle. If you have questions, please contact your city social justice inquisitor, who will come and investigate why you are making complaints and if your complaints are motivated by bias.

Or maybe SPD allocate their resources poorly. Try finding a detailed budget. Look into the black hole that is their 53-million-dollar “special operations” budget. Consider whether Seattle has a homeland and how many of SPD’s 1300 officers should be assigned to the security of it. Consider how many hundreds of riot cops show up to political demonstrations.

We need SPD to respond in force but instead the streets are empty of any patrol presence!

Stephanie Tschida has stepped up to make sure this happens.
Note to all- Eastpac is confirmed to meet this Thursday, August 23, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. We meet on the campus of Seattle University, usually in Chardin Hall- 11th and East Jefferson- I’ll confirm soon… we are also working to get the SPD gang unit there- reports from Captain Grenon (he’s out in training this week) indicate this is a gang feud between 2 rival gangs. More to come…stay tuned.
