Capitol Hill Pets | A moment with the famous Peaches McFly in Cal Anderson Park

Over the weekend, CHS spotted something white flying through Cal Anderson. We went to investigate and met Peaches McFly, a 19-year-old Goffin’s Cockatoo (Tanimbar corella), with an active social media following. His human, Taryn, says he’s been in the back of a police car and a fire truck. “He flew two blocks away and someone had called the police saying he was lost. They contacted me via his Instagram account and I went and got him out of the back of the police car. He’s a Seattle bird with a small cult following.” Peaches is a free flyer so if you see him soaring about the neighborhood, no worries, he knows where home is.

We ask photographer Alex Garland to follow marchers in the rain and do crazy things like trying to make yet another picture of yet another huge apartment building look interesting. We thought we’d ask him to do something a little more fun. Capitol Hill Pets is a semi-regular look at our furry, fuzzy, feathered, and finned friends found out and about on Capitol Hill.

Saddens me seeing/knowing a cockatoo/macaw is trapped in a cage. He gets to fly. what? Once a day, week, month? These very smart and very social animals are not meant to be in a cage, unable to freely spread their wings and alone. I’m surprised CHSB would write favorably on this.

I have been following Peach on Instagram for over a year. It looks like he gets to go out and fly at least every day. I would say that he gets out and about as much as most dogs.

You can stop feeling sad for Peaches. He is never trapped in a cage. As it says in the article he is a free flying bird. He is also very friendly and social and loves to fly around and meet new people. I’ve known him for years.

I know Peaches personally. He gets outside everyday and has free roam of his apartment!

Has anyone else noticed how many tropical birds are in this neighborhood? There are 3 massive macaws next door to us, and I see missing bird flyers up all the time. What gives??
