One shot in fight on E Union — UPDATE

The scene where the shooting occurred Wednesday morning around 3:20 AM (Images: CHS)

A victim was shot in what a witness said was a robbery gone wrong early Wednesday morning on E Union just off the main drag of the Pike/Pine nightlife district. But police say the shooting appears to be part of an altercation between two men with a grudge — not a hold-up.

SPD has confirmed the shooting and tells us the victim’s injuries were not believed to be life threatening. SPD’s brief on the incident has been added below.

Officers rushed to the area outside Sizzle Pie just after 3:20 AM to a reported disturbance and two cars speeding from the scene. They found shell casings and a trail of blood.

Minutes later, a male suffering a gunshot wound to his shoulder and injuries to his leg arrived at Kaiser Permanente’s emergency room on 16th Ave E. He was stabilized and quickly rushed to Harborview. Police say the victim is a 21-year-old man.

According to East Precinct radio reports, a witness and friend of the victim said he had been shot by two males attempting a robbery in the 1000 block of E Union. According to the witness, two young, black males were attempting the hold-up when the victim resisted and both reportedly opened fire. Police have not confirmed they are investigating the incident as a robbery. UPDATE 3:53 PM: Police believe the shooting stemmed from an altercation between two groups and that the assailant and the victim knew each other from a previous run-in.

Police were looking for a red, four-door Volvo reported leaving the E Union scene.

Officers also detained the driver who delivered the victim to the E Thomas entrance of the hospital and were collecting evidence from the car after it and the driver were found waiting in the alley north of Kaiser.

SPD gang and homicide detectives were called to help investigate the incident.

The shooting follows at least two gunfire incidents reported around Capitol Hill over the weekend.

UPDATE 10:11 AM: Here is the preliminary SPD report on the shooting:

East Precinct officers responded to a report of a shooting early Wednesday morning in the 1000 block of East Union. The victim, a 21-year-old male, is being treated at Harborview Medical Center for non life-threatening injuries.

At approximately 3:20 am, officers responded to a report of a disturbance between two groups at that location. The disturbance quickly escalated into shots being fired. Officers arrived but the parties involved had all fled the area in cars. Officers did locate a scene and began to collect evidence from the shooting. As officers were still on the scene, information came in from a nearby urgent care facility that a gunshot victim had been dropped off at their doors, and that the vehicle had driven away.

Officers responded to the urgent care facility. The victim was later transported to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of his non life-threatening injuries. The vehicle the victim was transported in was located a short distance away and the driver was interviewed by officers. The vehicle appeared to have been damaged by gunfire, and was impounded for detectives to examine later. The driver of the vehicle was released after he was interviewed.

Gang Unit detectives will handle the follow up investigation.

Get used to it Seattle. You’re getting what you asked for. No cops, city attorney who doesn’t charge on a ton of crimes, a city council who believes public safety is a joke……the warnings were raised in 2011 when it came to vagrancy. The people that raised the warnings were labled as alarmists and laughed at. Well…the great enlightenment has brought us to the city looking and smelling like a sewer. Don’t get me wrong…..where we all buy our $20 cocktails is pretty nice. But where people tend to live and work looks like something from the Walking Dead. The shootings will increase in frequency as our Officers simply do not have the time to pro-actively seek out criminals and interrupt the criminal activity. Even if they did have the time…why risk your career in politically charged Seattle?

It’s true, well said. This city is in the gutter, and the left wants to take us further into the sewer. Look at Swant’s comments yesterday. Only good idea she had was cutting salary of city council and mayor. But don’t worry, leftwing “safe storage” gun nanny laws will stop these continuous gang shootings. O’Brien, Teresa Mosqueda, Sawant, Herbold, Lorena Gonzalez and Dow Constatntine, Jay Inslee and Jenny Durkan to the rescue!!

Oh no. I knew it and knew it well. But why return? It was a lot rougher. The hang arounds at Jack in the Box, Deano’s, Chocolate City. I also miss Taco Time. Keep sticking your head in the sand. Let the insanity of our local elected officials cloud your thinking so much that the truth is impossible to comprehend.
