With a Hill holiday tradition ended, where to get your Capitol Hill Christmas tree

2018 is one of those years when Thanksgiving fell on the earliest possible date. That means the holiday season we are about to endure will be. The. Longest. Possible. That also means — for many — it is already time to find your Capitol Hill Christmas tree.

For the first time in nearly 30 years, your hunt won’t include the Seattle Area Support Groups tree lot after the nonprofit decided to end the annual fundraiser when faced with the prospect of finding a new home for the sale.

Where can you turn? Here are a few ideas:

  • One highly worthy option is 16th Ave S’s El Centro de la Raza. The nonprofit dedicated to representing the voice of King County’s Latino community has made its tree sale an annual tradition and important fundraiser. Details
  • The Stevens Elementary PTA’s annual tree sale runs Friday and Saturday, December 7th and 8th. You can preorder now and also arrange delivery. Details
  • Central Co-op has added trees to its offerings this year. “Central Co-op will have trees this year!,” the co-op says. “They are from Alpine Meadows in Deming, WA. Table-top, 4′-5′, and a few 5′ to 6′ trees as well.”
  • Other commercial options include Madison Valley’s City People’s, the annual tree lot in the Grocery Outlet at MLK and Union, and, of course, your favorite QFC.

Something we missed that does not involve illegal harvesting in a city park? Let us know in comments.

Very timely, I was just researching this this morning as I was mulling over whether or not to get a tree now that the SASG lot is closed up. They were always so friendly and helpful, I was really sad to see them go. El Centro de la Raza it is!

Here’s a thought. If you buy a tree, make a donation to an organization that plants trees. Just sayin’

Looks like there will be a handful at the Capitol Hill Farmers Market this weekend too: https://www.facebook.com/CapitolHillFarmersMarket/photos/a.10150321261156146/10155933956806146/?type=3&theater
